New asterism (new to me)

    I found an asterism, of which I'm unfamiliar. It was SW of Albirieo. It looks like the handle of a fly rod. A strict line of stars with a circle pattern in the middle. Seems to be a cluster at one and.

    Anyone recognize this beauty. It had a gorgeous blueish Hugh.

    Have you checked it with Stellarium or other sky-charting software?

    Yes, it's a nice group, I always knew it as the Coathanger, but it's got a few names. I think 'The Fly Rod' is really apposite. Next time I see it I'm going to think of it as a fly fishing rod and reel lol.

    Your Stellarium is gone, do you mean? What about an actual computer? PC or laptop?

    Stellarium crashed recently when Alex Wolf (a member here) and the rest of the developer's team transferred the entire project from one web-hosting outfit to another. It didn't go smoothly, which made Stellarium 'crash & burn' across all media - PC's, phones, the whole spectra. But it's not serious truly - the fix for users' like yourself is to go to the main Stellarium website (NOT to a hosting-service - the main website:

    http://stellarium.org/

    - and download a new copy of the Stellarium software and then install it on top of your old one. DO NOT change or block your old settings - unless you want to lose them - so watch the screen during the install and don't uncheck anything that says to remove the settings.

    Once installed, I'd suggest re-starting your machine and loading your Stellarium as usual. It should be up and running fine again.

    Below I'll attempt to leave a copy of a thread in another forum talking about the crash:

    Scrub the thread image - won't work properly. But you should have a good idea what happened and what caused the crash.

    @Pleiades nice nice, congratulation with these 2 nice objects! I will have to take a look at the Coathanger Cluster myself, it's true, this looks like a nice place and it must be impressive at low power.

    Dumbbell is a fantastic object of course, you could try sketching it someday too.

    Good catch, Pleiades. It's one of my favorite asterisms. I look forward to it every summer and fall. Here's a cool image of the coathanger (a.k.a. Brocchi's Cluster) by Steve Bowers from the Encyclopaedia Galactica (woh!):

    It's interesting that these stars aren't even related at all, just a chance visual grouping!:eek::eek::eek:
