A night of great seeing resulted in one of my best overall images of Mars and my first-ever image of Olympus Mons! The south polar cap, though small, was becoming more prominent, and a number of dark albedo features were on display:

ASTRONOMY - MARS OLYMPUS MONS (ZWO) 10-19-20.jpg

Equipment: Orion SkyView Pro 180mm Mak-Cass, ZWO ASI 224MC, Celestron 2x barlow
    Post-Processing: Registax 6, Photoshop

I was quite pleased and pleasantly surprised to capture Mons which I wasn't sure was possible without more aperture.

Brilliant Reggie! I bet you're pleased with that. Could you see it visually as well?

Very pleased, Mak! I still couldn't see Mons visually; the surface was washed out even with the polarising filter. But the polar cap popped out and dark albedo features stood out starkly. Post me a good rave up vid, lol! It's party time!

Photographing Olympus Mons probably needs some Northern Soul Girl as well!

    Reggie,

Fantastic images of Mars!!! Your equipment is quite capable.

During the 2016 apparition, just before I got into imaging, I made an observation where I was able to see clouds over the volcanoes, including Olympus Mons. I don't recall ever seeing the volcanoes visually, at least with my modest equipment.

Thanks, Ed. I agree with Mak, that is a nice sketch. Good notes, too. I can't see any volcanoes or craters visually either, no matter what filters I use. I guess I need more aperture for that (?) But I am glad I could image Olympus and the "eye", and I believe I may have captured a hint of the Tharsis Montes.

I've officially ended my Mars imaging for this apparition but the observing will continue for bit longer. Here are two of my best images from 2020, ironically neither from the dates of perigee or opposition. I was stoked to get Olympus Mons and Syrtis Major never disappoints:

Thanks! I had a time trying to post this. I wanted to start a new thread but I'm still not able to. My next target is the Jupiter-Saturn conjunction!

I can't see the pics. Any ideas?

The weather here has kept me indoors for a while. Winds, power outages, clouds, rain... Fun stuff.
