So as some of you may have noticed we currently do not have a proper home page for Astronomy Connect. As of right now we have a landing page purely for information about AC for new visitors, but once you have logged in/authenticated you no longer have access to this page and are redirected to the forums page.

It's been bugging me for a while that we don't have a nicer home page for our logged in members but I would love to hear ideas about what you would like to see on a home page for this type of community site. Judging by the traffic we have been getting people are visiting the site on a regular basis checking, the thread lists, and for updates. I believe making the home page a view to see the activity of the entire site would be ideal.

The ideas that have been bouncing around have been to have a home page with basically a grid of widgets and or summary sections for various parts of the site. Possible to also have other widgets or blocks that aid as observational tools based on a users set location in their profile.

So any feedback on how you think recent activity should be displayed or maybe describe how you currently look at new activity on site (ex. Do you manually look through the thread list, Do you use the Recent Activity, or do you use the forums new posts section to see all the latest posts you have missed since last visiting). Let me now how you consume your content. Also would you guys be interested in receiving a daily site digest much like Cloudy Nights has.

To me a Home Page should be more of a Dashboard. So a place to go that is a hub to get you around to different places but also shows you what is currently going on in those places so you know what's up immediately. So I would envision it being a bunch of square Quick Reference Panels (QRP) like are on the right side of this page. The page should be scroll down so you can just add more and more panels.

    Latest Articles QRP,
    Latest Threads QRP,
    Latest Replies QRP,
    Latest Admin Announcements QRP,
Latest Upcoming Sky Events QRP (what's in the sky to observe),
Latest Upcoming Astro Events QRP (star parties, gatherings, lectures, etc.)
    Newest Members QRP,
    Latest Product Reviews QRP,
    Newest Agena Product Additions QRP,
    Most Current Sale Item QRPs,
Newest Classifieds (when you add that) QRP, etc.

@BillP that's a great suggestions and something consider making a reality on here. Keep the suggestions flowing we appreciate it.

To clarify on one thing. When you say
Would you like the personal ability to add and remove blocks or do you mean for us, the site, to add more QRP blocks as they come along?

The latter. So don't be reluctant to have the home page get larger and larger so the user needs to scroll down to find everything. Sometimes designers get stuck into thinking the home page needs to fit within the confines of the screen. So if you allow it to scroll down for more real estate, then it can grow with more dashboard QRPs as we think of new ones.
