Manufacturer Description

These premium Japanese made Antares Plossls offer the observer the ultimate in contrast. With superior lens polishing with multi-coating on all internal air-glass surfaces, these eyepieces provide orthoscopic-type definition with the added luxury of a 52 degree apparent field. In this regard, the extra field makes them more usable as an all-around eyepiece. Planets, as well as elusive nebulosities and clusters will be presented with dazzling detail. Standard features include 5 or 7 element designs with premium, fully multicoated, edge blackened optics, engraved lettering, slip-on eyeshield and standard filter threaded barrels. The result: Ultra-crisp imaging. In Antares' tests, these eyepieces have never been beaten at what they do. For the discerning observer.

      4.0 My primary planetary eyepiece

      Pros:

      Sharp optics,Good value

      Cons:

      Eye Relief

      Comments:

The 7.5mm Elite is a great eyepiece. While the eye relief is a bit tight (as you would expect from a Plossl-like design of this focal length), the visual quality is superb. This is my primary planetary eyepiece, which I use in my 10" f/4.92 Dob to yield 166.7x magnification. Images are sharp and contrasty and the visual field is flatter than what you would expect from a Plossl-like design. Others sell the same thing under their own name but charge upwards of $100. That not only makes the 7.5mm Elite a great eyepiece, but a great value as well. You wont be disappointed!

4.0 The 7.5mm Antares Elite plossl

      Pros:

      Crystal sharp to the edge

      Cons:

      Tight eye relief,Small eye lens

      Comments:

The Antares Elite plossls are put in the same quality category as Televue plossls and Ultrascopic by many. In comparing this to an 8mm Televue, I gave a slight edge to the Televue on Jupiter but couldn't tell any difference on galaxies or nebulae. The views even at F/5 are crisp to the edge with the only problems being a small eye lens and tight eye relief even without glasses. Also, for many of us, there are only a few nights when the viewing allows us to use over 250X and my 1250mm fl dob with a 7.5 mm eyepiece produces 167x so it often doesn't do well barlowed. But, on a few nights I was able to catch Mars near opposition with this barlowed 2x and once at 3x with results so interesting I had to sketch. I saw a tiny ice cap on the south pole and a large one on the north as well as a great deal of contrast and patterns in the mares but no canals.
