Manufacturer Description

The 25mm, 20mm, 15mm, 11mm, and 8mm Plossls round out the focal lengths for various observing from deep sky to planetary. They work best with Tele Vue Powermates to effectively double the number of focal lengths in your collection. Far superior to eyepieces usually provided as standard with most instruments.

Since TeleVue introduced their Plossls in 1980, they have won praise and patents, including a patent in Japan. Tele Vue Plossls, designed by Al Nagler, have been a recognized benchmark of performance and value in the class of 50° apparent field of view eyepieces. While the Plossls may be Tele Vue's least expensive eyepiece line, they still enjoy the same care and attention to detail as their most expensive. While it's easy for other manufacturers to vie for the lowest price, Tele Vue continues to believe that quality, performance and consistency will ultimately reward you with the most value for your dollar.

Diffraction limited "on-axis" performance is a given. Using more expensive high-index glasses to reduce astigmatism and lateral color at the field's edge, Tele Vue Plossls deliver sharper images than any other brand of 4 or 5 element Plossls or Orthoscopic designs. The faster the focal ratio of your telescope, the greater your visual reward for using Tele Vue eyepieces. Tele Vue Plossls feature full multicoatings for greatest light transmission and contrast. Blackened lens edges and internal anti-reflection threads tweak the last bit of contrast for maximum image detail. The sharper field focuses faint star light into perceptible points and allows those with undriven mounts to gaze longer before repositioning the image.

For a bit more than generic brands, you can own genuine Tele Vue Plossls

4.0 15mm TV - great except for one thing!

      Pros:

      Very good in all areas

      Cons:

Can't see the entire FOV without looking around the corner!

      Comments:

This is a really good eyepiece in every way, just like the other plossls. The only thing that bugged me on this one is that the entire field of view was hard to see with the eye cup up. I had to look around the corner. Picky, picky I know!

      5.0 More than enough

      Pros:

Many: In almost every aspect a top rated EP

      Cons:

Little: Price is problem as it is the highest for any plossl

      Comments:

I purchased this EP along with an 11mm Tele Vue Plossl and a 9mm Antares Ortho. They were my last upgrades to my EP collection of which most were economy plossls. I had a choice to make: Should I purchase one "premium" EP for approximately $225 or go with three "good" EPs. I choose the latter.

Upon arrival I was impressed with the obvious quality of construction of this eyepiece. The lettering is not simply painted on the barrel but engraved. When tilting the large eye lens under a strong light, a green tint was readily apparent. This is an indication of quality coatings. The chrome focus side of the barrel has a safety recess. The rubber eyecup is well made - soft, but stiffer than most. Thus, it will stand up to repeated use, holding its form when pressed against the eye of an observer. Even the end caps show a commitment to quality as the company logo is engraved in the smaller plastic of the two. The fit and feel is that of a first rate piece of equipment, and its performance is a match for its construction.

The main reason for its purchase was as a planetary ocular. I used my previous 15mm plossl with my Celestron barlow with much success. The resulting focal length of that combination is 7.5mm. This FL produces a magnification of 160X when used with my F6 Dob. I was pleased with the views through my previous 15mm plossl, but the views through the Tele Vue were a clear visual improvement.

No distortions or aberrations are visible. From edge to edge the objects are as distinct and clear as possible. The FOV and eye relief are just fine. All plossls have a limited FOV of approx 52 degrees, some of which contains distortions or aberrations that hamper the view. However, when using this EP that FOV is clear.

DSOs are a pleasure to observe. No curvature is observable and the contrast is very good. I have combined this EP with various filters without a problem. No matter what scope I have used with the EP, the views are about as good as it can get.

When I purchased this item I was looking to improve on my 15mm plossl. But I got much more than I anticipated.

      5.0 Televue 15mm Plossl

      Pros:

Top quality optics; Hold to their value even when used

      Cons:

For a plossl....can't think of one.

      Comments:

I just love the Televue 15mm plossl. The field of view is a tad short but the quality is top notch. The plossl line of eyepieces from Televue is their bottom line and the optics are just super. I've never looked through one and been disappointed. Stars are pin point almost out to its edge. I've never owned a Nagler or a Panoptic, but they must be something else! The stats are: Field stop diameter 12.6mm, eye relief 6mm, barrel size 1.25", 4 elements and its weight is 0.2 lbs. The field of view is 50 degrees. The optics are fully multi coated as you would expect with Televue. It comes boxed with end caps. Cost is around $80.00 new and they hold to their value even on the used market.
