Anyone a fan of airborne naked eye astronomy? I had a beautiful view last night of Venus and the infant moon when flying from Lisbon to London on a tap air Portugal plane.due to the cabin lights you have to restrict yourself to bright objects and, it goes without saying!, get a window seat.here's my tips.wear a hooded top and you can use the hood to block out some cabin light.many of the self check in machines allow you to select a seat.so if you know Venus is in the west and you know the plane is headed north east then select a seat on the planes left by a window. On long overnight flights they dim the cabin lights so you can get great views of the stars,I remember flying with Iberia from Rio de Janeiro to Madrid and looking south at Scorpius at 37000'.

Perfect idea, Kevan! I did a lot of flying in my younger days and it never occurred to me to look up, rather than down. Next time I visit my son in Heidelberg, I'll give that a shot; above the clouds and no light pollution but for the dim cabin.

I've always been a window seat person because I always feel it's amazing to watch the earth too and at night the sky.strangely enough business class is worse than steerage for stargazing as the modern pod type seats are angled away from the window in most modern configurations.one of those very upmarket private cabins on I believe Emirates would be ideal but would leave you near bankrupt!
