Been reading David Levy's piece about what he calls alloute telescopes.because he's originally from Montreal .for some reason he names them after the French song alloute. He's a comet hunter and now seems to live in or near phoenix,Arizona. These telescopes are little under powered things.I struck a cord as I have a collection of small monoculars plus a 25mm astronomical refractor. He describes how handy these tiny scopes are as he views the star achanar from a cruise ship going through the Panama canal. Indeed what good is a big telescope if you can't travel with it?he reckons achanar skirts just over the horizon from phoenix. That stars pretty far south and I think I've seen it from Acapulco but no further north.of course it's prominent south of the equator.

Must be the infamous Levy of Shoemaker-Levy9 , whose comet vandalized Jupiter awhile ago? Well Arizona would be the ideal place to hang one's hat to hunt the things with tails! Dry and arid with few clouds? Sounds great to me!

One in the same gentleman I believe. Phoenix city is probably very light polluted, never been there.Montreal I'm guessing similar to Vermont?grey and overcast a fair bit?I went there years ago on a bus from Boston to Montreal run by Vermont transit went via New Hampshire too if I recall. I remember that it was rather scenic mountains wise.that was in an October so it was a bit cold too.I don't think that I tried to stargaze on that trip.
