Glad I stumbled across this community! While I've always had an interest in things astronomical, I have recently been spurred to look more deeply into this field. My current hobby is collecting, storing and enjoying premium cigars and while having my evening smoke on the back porch in August, I was intrigued by the August 24th conjunction of Mars, Saturn and Antares, plainly visible in my southern evening sky. I tried observing with my 10x50 binoculars but was frustrated by a slight tremble, and decided then to invest in an Orion Sky View Pro 8'' after studying reviews. This reflector fit within my limited budget and it's mount is adaptable for GoTo at a later date.
My special interest is comets since I saw Halley's in '86 and Hale Bopp in '97. I hope to be all set up by early 2017 in the event some bright comet strays my way. Since I'm such a glaring noob, I won't be contributing much to these discussions, but I figure to learn much from all you folks here. BTW, I'm interested in hearing from anyone from the Burkburnett area!

Welcome Zigarro and congrats on the new scope. Binoculars are a great way to observe the night sky, but you need a sturdy tripod or better yet a parallelogram mount. A 8" reflector is a good size telescope to start with; not too big to move around and yet large enough aperture to offer pleasing views of many DSOs. Share your learnings and adventures with the group.

    Zigarro,

Welcome. I too am new here and found out that there is not too small of a question. Everyone is willing to answer and especially those who have great experience, please don't be afraid to ask, I can learn from your questions too. I also enjoy a good cigar every so often while sipping on good whisky.

Zigarro, I just sent you a conversation, too off topic for this forum but a good recipe I learned in the Bahamas. BTW, I have a Celestron PowerSeeker80 EQ, I enjoy it much!
