Originally from England, I've lived in Chile for about 25 years. My interest in astronomy started as a teenager, and has accompanied me on and off ever since. Sometimes on the move or based in big contaminated cities, I've mostly enjoyed telescopes belonging to other people and clubs, but my own current scope is a 120mm Celestron Omni refractor - good enough for my needs.

I live near a small town in the foothills of the Andes mountain range. Although conditions aren't so good as the Atacama Desert were some of the World's top research observatories are located, I can easily get to splendid dark sky sites and the weather is generally good.

I also enjoy the history of astronomy - from the earliest times to the near present.

Looking forward to enjoying the contributions of members here!

    Hi Pat -

Funny running into you in here! :D

Nice to see you've made it. There's quite a bit of good material in and about this haunt, and now that you've rolled in, more is on the horizon I'm sure!

    Enjoy!

    Welcome Pat.

120 mm refractor should give you some very nice views.

Have you ever used binoculars for star gazing? I often use binoculars when I only have a short time or when I am viewing certain targets that I like better in binoculars, such as the Pleiades.

This is a smaller forum but the people are friendly and helpful. I look forward to reading your posts.

Thanks for the welcomes, George, Dave and Aeajr!

I have two pairs of binoculars, 8x40 and 12x50, and I always have one or the other close to hand. Binoculars are a really great compliment to my telescope and I probably use them for observing at least 50% of the time.

I also have a rather nice 20-60 zoom x 100mm aperture vintage Carton spotting-scope, circa 1970, which I often take out if I'm driving through anywhere dark. Set up on the roof of my pick-up, it's very useful for a quick 15 minute session. Probably better options, but I have a lot of fun!
