    There are reports of a regional dust storm in the Valles Marineris. Activity began in Chryse according to reports.

    Oh no.. just as I was hoping that I could have good observation of Mars with my new mirror... Let's hope that it's not going to last... If it's only regional.. maybe

    Yes, it is a bit disconcerting. They often don't last long though.

    Update. It's spreading south with Aurorae Sinus covered according to one report.

    ok not good... if I finally reach a day where I am not too tired to look at Mars. it will be full of dust again.

    Let's hope not..

    I think occasional localised storms are always going to happen. There were some on the last oppo'.

    Latest: storm continues as a large regional event. Can now be seen at the terminator apparently.

    Thanks for the Mars updates. I remember in 2018 when Mars was blanketed by a planet-wide dust storm. You couldn't observe anything visually. Even RGB images would turn up nothing but a near featureless disk. I finally imaged in both RGB and IR, layering them to get an image with some detail.

    You're welcome Ed. I think localised storms are normal, planet-wide storms are rare hopefully. I remember 2018 as well. IIRC I observed Mars a few times until the storm enveloped the whole planet.

    I had a VERY good observation of Mars also in 2018 before the wide storm, best views of the features ever.. then everything was gone.

    I really need to wake up at 5:AM before it's too late, putting he maximum amount of power available to see that planet.

    Yeah I remember before the storm. It did clear a bit a lot later IIRC.

    I remember after the storm yeah it was clear but nothing like before the storm, I think the planet was already much smaller , can't quite remember.

    I was coming back from the dark spot and the planet was up in the sky at around 1:00AM, I reinstalled the telescope on the deck at home and caught my best views of mars! ((:)

    Now my astronomy expectations for tonight are dead, it's full of clouds.. I wanted to look at Jupiter and Saturn with the RLT at around 22:00.. but it won't happen most likely, according to the forecast and the current condition of the sky (it's pretty bad)

    Option B was to wake up at 5:00AM to look at Mars, but the forecast is even worse... I think my only option for tonight will be the grab and go 6" if the sky is a disaster, at least not too much efforts would be lost..

    There are reports of seeing evidence of the storm in Solis Lacus.

    Woups.. storms again, damn.

    Tonight I am at the beginning of the jet stream, it's taking the air from me and sending it to Iceland directly. It was a very windy day but it stopped.

    Apparently green filters are good for discerning storms. Not sure if I'll see much evidence of them with a 127mm Mak. Mars is 12.1 arc seconds in size at the moment.

    Cheers for reminding me about that page Ed. Filter use can be a bit subjective. I discovered yellow/yellow-green filters were good for Mars by accident a few years ago. I have a few 'Mars' filters.

    It's easy to get carried away though! lol
