A thread started in appreciation of the mission that took us into deep space, Pioneer 10, launched March 2, 1972 on an Atlas-Centaur vehicle. It was the first spacecraft to traverse the asteroid belt and to make observations and obtain close-up images of Jupiter. It is currently over 8 billion miles away, approaching the interstellar medium (Voyager 1, though launched in 1977, is a faster craft and reached the interstellar medium in 2012). Last telemetry was received on January 23, 2003.

Thanks for the memories, Reggie! Very good thing to replace Thankstaking Day holiday with - Launch Day.

I remember the crackpots in our land making a big stink about our sending out "dirty pictures!" Still amazes me what all crawls out of the woodwork.

"Thankstaking Day" - very apropos of the occasion, lol!
The Pioneer missions always seem to get overshadowed by the later ones. I barely remember Pioneers 10 & 11, but at the time the images and information they sent back was off the chain! Maybe in 2022 there'll be a big 50 year commemoration, and by then, Pioneer 10 will probably be in the interstellar medium!
