Imaging and observing on the night of opposition revealed the notable Seeliger effect. The rings of Saturn show significant brightening from the full illumination of the Sun. I included an image from just a week prior "highlighting" the effect. Both images were captured with the ASI 224mc and Orion 180mm Mak-Cass using FireCapture, processed in Registax 6, with post-processing in Photoshop. Identical capture settings were used for both images:

I generally prefer imaging Saturn in the weeks before or after opposition. The Seeliger effect seems to wash out the finer details (at least for me).

    Clear skies!

Hey, sojourneyer, do you do any imaging? I was a solid observer-only until I got the bug about ten years ago. I started out just attaching my DSLR to my Mak getting shots of the Moon and the Orion Nebula, and then I graduated to buying CCD/CMOS cameras. I've managed to keep my budget down, just dealing with basic astrophotography of planets, stars (including our Sun), and brighter DSOs. I still love to observe and most nights I don't bother with setting up kit, but on special occasions I can't resist.

No Reggie. No time to image nor the inclination. I also am limited in the weight and size of a scope.

If push comes to shove for the future I would contemplate a larger (3") version of the ZWO Seestar S50 Smart Telescope. The possibilities are endless!!

    Hi Reggie,

Beautiful images. I agree about the brightness washing out the details. I downloaded your 8/26 Seeliger image and tried processing it using GIMP. It didn't really make any significant difference.

I remember early this year I tried imaging Jupiter, which was exceptionally bright in the night sky. Long story short, I don't have any Jupiter images for 2023.

I am doing well, just returned from a month long motocycle tour of central Europe.

The skies were excellent though I only packed a small set of binoculars.
Storage limitations on a motocycle unfortunately.
There were a few nights I wished for one of my telescopes with the planets presenting so well.
