I don't like anyone smoking around my telescope. Does that sound petty? I don't want anything like that sticking to my lenses and EP's and scope all together, yet I don't want to upset any guest viewing who might want to light up, I do once in a while but not near a scope. Any suggestions?

I would believe it should not be a problem, with a reasonable person, to explain that the particulate matter from the smoke can damage the optical coatings. If they do decide to light up ask them to do it down wind away from the scope.

I generally find that people are ok with being told no if you explain why as oppose to just because. :)

I generally try to use friendship in all cases and maybe I could explain the reasons before we get started. I suppose you would also set up the scope up wind away from camp fires as well.

Yep. I agree! And I'm a smoker so I really get it. Sooo tempting sometimes to light up during a long night, but I resist....or go as far away as I can in our sardine-can backyard.

Golly, but I hope fumes from the occasional outdoor midnight Bourbon are OK :D

When I was smoking I used to smoke in my car and I didn't like what it did to my windows. I wouldn't want that to happen to anyone's telescope. I feel it's a simple enough that no one will argue with it.

Inside a car is a quite air-tight environment, so I wouldn't suggest smoking in them. Period. But banning people from smoking outdoors? With air-currents always shifting? Me thinks that's overkill.

Dave - who suggests anyone who smokes - only smoke pure tobacco. What the store-bought ready-rolls (Marlboro, Kool, etc.) have in them would amaze you!

Cigarette smoke outside is not going to fly over and land on your lens. I am more concerned with bird and bat droppings at StarOak Observatory. Some nights there are 30 bats buzzing around and twice in my life I have had owls land on my telescope while observing..... They could really leave a mess on ones glass....... LOL

This is making me comfortable. I have a good friend who wants to get in to astronomy. I should brief him on smoking while looking. Who would have thought about bats and birds at night, good point!! I would rather have them make a mess on me than my scope:p. BTW, I'm working on not smoking at all.
