I have an 8" SCT that I use with an f/0.63 reducer and want a light weight guiding solution. I have tried tandem mounts with an ST80. Works okay, but the weight is taxing on my AVX mount. And now I am playing with 50mm Williams finder/guiders with my QHY5.
I keep thinking that an OAG set up would be simpler, but I'm afraid it will make it very difficult to find a guidestar.

What is your preferred guiding solution for an 8" SCT?

I use an ONAG from Innovations Foresight. It looks at the same field as the camera.

Have you looked into PHD2 guiding software? It looks like this avoids OAG, but yes, things can get a bit messy and expensive and discouraging. I am about to start some AP this year and am researching what'd be best to start with myself. I think I need a laptop, software, more power, guide scope, CCD imager or dslr, and money, time, guidance (no pun intended) and patience. Yikes!

I used to do rookie AP with an 8" SCT at prime focus with an OAG with illuminated retical an a 35mm camera lol.. No goto, no software, just a tracking motor and ra/Dec control. Needless to say, got some good pics of the moon, but most other shots were drifty.
