BurnHam's Celestial Handbook
Pros:Very detailed observations; Historical ; Very thorough and well written.
Cons:Some scientific info is now dated.
Comments:This 3 volume set is a literary masterpiece in the realm of astronomical observations. Robert Burnham completed his masterful work while employed at the Lowell Observatory, circa 1958, as a proper motion analyst. When not engaged in his regular duties, Burnham would use the observatory's telescope to catalog info on every constellation from A to Z.
Bottom Line: Would you recommend this item? Yes
Each of these volumes list constellations in alphabetical order, with detailed scientific info and observational notes written in a very conversational tone that truly captures and holds the reader's attention. Burnham explores not only the technical details, but delves into mythology, star lore, history and even poetry. There is literally hundreds of B&W photos, tables, charts, diagrams, and personal observations that makes this such an enjoyable read.
It is very difficult to put into words the depth and scope of this man's work. The only glitch is that much of the scientific info is now dated because of new discoveries and advances in the astronomy world since the books were first published. That being said, I think any amateur worth his salt should own and read this great literary achievement in the realm of astronomical observations.Sep 15, 2007The Definitive "Handbook of the Heavens"
Pros:Chock-full of data, lore and images, wonderfully written.
Cons:Much of the material is outdated.
Comments:I joined the Astronomy Book Club in 1986 and received as a gift the hardcover version of Burnham’s Celestial Handbook. In 3 large volumes, the book at first glance looks formidable. This is, however, one of the most comprehensive, fact-filled and enjoyable astronomy books out there!
Bottom Line: Would you recommend this item? Yes
The Handbook is arranged alphabetically by constellation after an informative and entertaining introduction. At the beginning of each section there are charts detailing double and multiple stars and Deep Space Objects. After the charts, there are pages of text devoted to each constellation’s most prominent stars and DSOs, detailing everything from visual and scientific characteristics to mythology and lore surrounding the constellations and the objects within. The book includes a wealth of beautiful black & white photographs taken by what were when the book was published in the 1970s, the best Earth-based observatories of the day. (And ALL observatories of the day were Earth-based.)
If Burnham’s Celestial Handbook has any shortcomings, it’s because the book was published about 30 years ago. There have been so many scientific advances and developments since the book was first published that some of the data and most of the images are very outdated. Still, Burnham’s own musings, analysis and commentary are such a pleasure to read that this is easy to overlook.
In conclusion, even though it contains some outdated information, Burnham’s Celestial Handbook is a must-have book for anyone who considers him or herself an Astronomy Enthusiast.Sort by
