Mar 28, 2008Greatest add-on for the NexStar 4!
Pros:Well-made; Adaptable
Cons:None
Comments:One of the really great features with the Celestron NexStar 4 is the internal flip mirror. It opens up a whole range of interesting things to do with the scope. When I originally purchased my scope, one of the first optional items I obtained for it was the Celestron T-Adapter-C90 along with an appropriate "Pentax thread" T-Ring for my ancient Yashica TL 35mm camera. This allows me to take photos (both day and night) using the telescope as a telephoto lens.
Bottom Line: Would you recommend this item? Yes
Now for a really great mod! The internal diameter of the T-Adapter at the camera end is 1 1/4". I carefully drilled and tapped a 4-40 threaded hole centered in the "knurled" area just above the threads on the camera end of the adapter. I Then inserted a "black" knurled "hex-key" machine screw into the tapped hole. This now turns the T-Adapter into a standard 1 1/4" accessory adapter for the telescope back.
This adapter can now be used to attach a webcam or a surveillance-type video camera to the scope (or any other accessory).
Further, because of clearance issues, if you have your scope mounted on a wedge, you can add a standard 1 1/4" diagonal and eyepiece. The advantage here is that you can have one eyepiece mounted at the rear, and another (using a parfocal ring) in the standard focuser. You then have two eyepieces on the scope and you can merely "flip' back and forth between them. My favorite combination is to use a 30mm Erfle in the standard focuser and a 10mm MA in the rear diagonal. This gives me a wonderful wide-field view with the Erfle, and a magnified view with the other, as needed!
This has worked out to be the best accessory I have added to this scope.Sort by
