Very informative and entertaining magazine
Pros:Informational; Entertaining; Monthly Sky Charts
Cons:Price
Comments:Astronomy magazine has been my choice for several years. It is very informational for the beginner as well as the seasoned amateur. I'm sure that even the professional astronomers find the news and articles useful.
Bottom Line: Would you recommend this item? Yes
The front cover is very well illustrated and definitely “coffee table” friendly. Besides the in-depth articles included each month, there are regular entertaining features. Bob Berman's “Strange Universe” column is one of my favorites and the first that I turn to when I receive my issue. The “Astro News” section is another of my favorites that features the latest findings in the Astro community.
Monthly star charts and info on the planets, asteroids, meteor showers, etc. are conveniently laid out in a centerfold section. Unlike monthly magazines from years ago, Astronomy magazine is “on time” and not delivered to your door a month later.
Of course, there's plenty of advertising if you like drooling over astro gear. The price is a little high but no more than the competition. I believe they offer a discount for Astronomy clubs, special organizations, and new subscribers.Mar 31, 2008A colorful and delightful magazine!
Pros:Great graphics and photography; Appeals to the general public
Cons:A bit pricey
Comments:From its first editions, Astronomy magazine has stood out for it use of spectacular graphics and photography. It has always had visual appeal, and has not generally been accused of looking "too scientific" or "professional" for the common person. It has had a large appeal to both those interested in astronomical pursuits and to those with just casual interest.
Bottom Line: Would you recommend this item? Yes
The articles are written well and have general mass appeal, but usually are not as "in depth" or "techie" as some of the competition. It has established itself as a major force in the astronomical publication world. On a few occasions it has been criticized as having too much advertising, but then that appeals also to many people.
I have always found it visually stimulating. Though it is extremely popular in the Northern Hemisphere, it doesn't seem to have the coverage of the Southern Hemisphere as well as some other publications.
Still, I give it a hearty "well done"!Oct 26, 2007Astronomy Magazine
Pros:Great presentation and layout of material; New product showcases; Insightful columns; Great star maps and photos.
Cons:None
Comments:To be honest, I prefer "Astronomy" magazine over the other leading astro mags. Why? Well, I like what I consider a cleaner layout and arrangements of the materials presented. It's sort of like comparing Home Depot to Lowe's, they both offer similar and unique products, but their layout and presentation are different. The other magazine just seems to be filled with so many "factoids", that in my opinion leads to information overload.
Bottom Line: Would you recommend this item? Yes
"Astronomy" has great photos, articles, editorials, equipment reviews, new products, and of course great monthly columns by some well known writers like Phil Harrington, Bob Berman, and others. There is also the great star maps and charts included in each issue.
After everything is said and done, you may find that you don't agree with my assessment, but you owe it to yourself to check out a copy and decide for yourself.Sort by
