      5.0 Meade 10" LX200-R

      Pros:

Great optics, super heavy duty mount, great for imaging.

      Cons:

Very poor documentation, very heavy, I would not recommend unless you plan to mount permanently.

      Comments:

Very well engineered. The optics are great. The mount is very heavy duty and handles a piggyback scope for imaging quite easily. Once aligned the go to optics are great. Using the park scope feature and since my scope is mounted in a home made observatory, all I have to do is go out, power up the scope, slew to a known star, center it, and I am ready to go. The micro-focuser works great for fine tuning the focus. I always set the micro-focuser about 1/2 way out, use the focus knob to rough focus, then use the micro-focuser to fine tune. This also stops the mirror from shifting the object.

      5.0 Meade LX200R Scope

      Pros:

Well engineered. Is very good at what telescopes are designed for.

      Cons:

Weak documentation. Poor finder scope (replace it). Not impressed with microfocuser (not used).

      Comments:

My first quality scope after a few cheap refractors, so limited on experience (about 3 month so far). Compared to what I have been used to, it is fantastic. I evaluate this scope on 3 primary factors: ALLIGN, FIND, and SEE.

      1. Allign - Meade got it right. With built-in GPS and LNT, most is done for you. Just center on the 2 stars it finds for you and you are done. Have used Celestron's 3-star allignment in the past, and this is far superior although the newer Celestron versions may have improved.

      2. Find - After allignment, all GOTO's for planets, deep sky objects, etc are placed squarely in the eyepiece from then on. And if you find that they are not always perfectly centered, you can invoke the "Precision Allign" function. If you have a limited number of clear night opportunities each month and want to see as much as possible, this is for you. Identifying what you want to see is simple. Slewing to it is fast. And when you look into the eyepiece, it will be there. What could be better? OK, let the scope take you on a guided tour of "Tonight's Best". That's really cool.

      3. See - The first 2 items are great. This is even better. Don't expect to see "Hubble-quality" views of M51 when you go there, but do plan to see some incredible sights. And I don't have the experience to compare the RC optics of the LX200R with traditional SCT's. However, from the Great Orion Nebula and it's Trapezium, to craters on the moon - stunning. Clear images with dark back-grounds and high contrast. Able to resolve many individual stars in star clusters (my favorite deep sky objects) such as M13. As far as details of Saturn's rings, Jupiter's bands, and moons of both, etc, it does very well what I bought it for.

Bottom Line: Would you recommend this item? Yes
