      3.0 Good value, but heavy

      Pros:

Affordable; 10x is a plus with 50mm lens.

      Cons:

Edge sharpness is an issue; Body is heavy.

      Comments:

I had this pair of binoculars for quite some time. It is bulky compared to the other binoculars I have. Handling is easy, but as others have suggested, I found the outer edge (beyond 60-70%) start going out of focus. The eye relief is generous. I wear glasses and it is actually very comfortable to use the binoculars with my glasses on.

      2.0 Nikon Action Extreme 10x50

      Pros:

Good feel while viewing, Best views within 50-60% of the field

      Cons:

Pricey, Outer 30-40% is very distorted

      Comments:

While observing Comet Holmes with group of friends last night, I got a chance to observe through a pair of Nikon AE 10x50 binoculars. The views were not bad, but not too good either.

I was informed that they cost around $140 new and the eye relief is a nice 17mm. The eyecups twist out and are semi-hard with a click notch that holds at 3 extended positions. When the eyecups are fully extended, the eye lens is recessed about 6mm from the top of the eyeguard. The binoculars weigh in at 36oz. They have a right diopter focusing mechanism (as on most binoculars) and the finger grips were nice. They were a pleasure to hold onto while viewing.

In this pair of binoculars, stars start distorting about 50% out from the center. By about 60%, the view was poor and by 75% or so, it was useless. Stars in the middle 50% were excellent pinpoints with a decent black background.

I compared these with the Orion Worldviews (which weigh about the same). Given the views through the Orion pair costing under $50, I was not vowed by the view through the Nikon. All things considered, these were just OK given that your viewing is restricted to the center of the field. Don’t be overly critical and you’ll like these, but there are many other nice binoculars out there for much less money.
