Sharp but small
Pros:Sharp clear views for a bargain price
Cons:Restrictive eye relief, small FOV
Comments:I purchased this EP so I could obtain the maximum magnification with my 8" f/6 Dob. Up to that point in time (approx. early 2004) I had never owned an Orion Sirius plossl, but had read they provided decent views for the money. So, I added it to my bill for the 8" Dob.
Bottom Line: Would you recommend this item? Yes
It is obviously well built. Listed as multi-coated, it comes with a soft rubber eye cup. It is shipped with caps for both ends of the occular. It has a very small eye lens.
The views through this EP are always sharp and clear. It has very good color correction and the contrast is first rate. I cannot discern any curvature nor distortion of any type, edge to edge. No ghosting was apparent even on the brightest objects. The views provided are as sharp and clear as those through a much more expensive EP. It works well with fast or slow scopes and can be used with various filters.
The major down side is the extremely small eye relief and a limited FOV. I was able to remedy the FOV somewhat by folding down the eye cup. This enabled me to position my eye as close as needed to the lens. When used as such, I was able to take advantage of the full FOV. There is no answer for the short eye relief.
I like this EP. If one can adjust to the restrictive eye relief you will find it does a credible job. However, if you use glasses to view or just do not like to crunch up to an EP this one is not for you.Sep 27, 2007Orion Sirius 6.3mm Plossl
Pros:Well built; Inexpensive
Cons:Practically no eye relief; Very small eye lens
Comments:There are times when you look back on your accumulation of eyepieces and wonder to yourself, "Now why did I buy this eyepiece?" Such is the case with the Orion Sirius 6.3mm plossl. I think I may have bought this ocular to do some high power planetary viewing, but quickly found myself squinting through a small peep hole, and trying to focus and hold the image in the field of view. What I could see was pretty sharp, but the very short eye relief was enough to call it quits with this ocular. This plossl has a 50 degree FOV, with a 4 element design and is well built. But again, the minimal eye relief is enough to leave this puppy stored away in the corner of your case.
Bottom Line: Would you recommend this item? No
With the market offering so many new long eye relief short focal length eyepieces, this Sirius plossl sees very little light.Sort by
