The standard against which others are judged!
Pros:Large and easy to use; Great for positional plotting
Cons:None
Comments:SkyAtlas 2000.0 - Deluxe is probably the standard against which most other general atlases are judged today. For myself, I have always treasured my large, hard-bound, desktop deluxe version of the Scalnate Pleso 1950.0 (also from Sky Publishing). But it is quite out of date now. The SkyAtlas 2000.0 - Deluxe is the closest thing available on the market today.
Bottom Line: Would you recommend this item? Yes
For those of us that still like to do manual calculations of positions and use manual setting circles, it is probably the best tool available. The inclusion of its plastic overlay makes positional plotting quite easy.
While not as convenient (size wise) as the Pocket Sky Atlas out in the field, if I have a table for charts available, it is the clear winner! My only wish is that Sky Publishing would make a hard-bound (left to right / book type) desktop version again!Feb 17, 2008Sky Atlas 2000.0
Pros:Large, Easy to see, Color coded
Cons:It may be a little tough for a beginner to use
Comments:If I wasn’t interested in astronomy I’d buy this just to have it on the coffee table for display. It’s worth every penny and will get lots of use. The atlas is an excellent aid to planning an evening under the sky. I love it and I recommend this purchase to anyone with more than a passing interest. My opinion is that the Deluxe or Desk version is preferable because you can see the object numbers and markings better. I chose the Deluxe Version which is black stars on a white background and the DSOs are color coded. An argument against these versions is that the white affects your night vision yet I've never found it to be a factor for me. Also, all the other major chart publishers use a white background with black stars for there atlases. Sky Atlas 2000.0 isn't well suited for vary faint or obscure objects, this is where an atlas with more detail is needed. I find that the Sky Atlas 2000 is user friendly and gives me that wide field view that I like for finding objects and scanning the sky.
