Televue Nagler 20T2
Pros:Wide and sharp star field.
Cons:Weight and cost.
Comments:Very good eyepiece, got one on the used market for a decent price. I use it in an 8cm (3.1") APO and 20cm (8") and 30cm (12") F/5 dobs. Despite the 8 lenses and 'old fashioned' coating used, the eyepiece is highly recommended.
Bottom Line: Would you recommend this item? Yes
You have to bury your eye in it to see the entire field, so I think if you wear glasses the spaceship-porthole-effect is less attainable. The rubber eyecup totally blacks out the stray light. Pinpoint sharp star-images.
If you can get your hands on a used one for a good price, get it!Oct 13, 2007TeleVue Nagler Type 2 20mm
Pros:Best eyepiece ever on my f/10 SCT, 82 degree FOV, Tele Vue quality
Cons:Discontinued, Heavy, Expensive even on the used market.
Comments:I went to a star party on the night of Oct 13 '07 in south New Jersey and borrowed three Naglers to use in my 8" LX-90 f/10 SCT for the night. This is the review of the 20mm type 2 Nagler.
Bottom Line: Would you recommend this item? Yes
Simply put - WOW!! This eyepiece worked perfectly in my SCT. The views were very flat and the stars were pinpoint across the entire 82 degree field of view. Of all the objects viewed, clusters appeared the best - to be able to see individual stars in the clusters wwas just great.
Unfortunately this eyepiece is now discontinued, but it is worth the effort to try and get one on the used market. The weight is an awesome 2.5 pounds and you need a large scope so that you do not have a balance problem. The cost is around $250 to $350 on the used market, depending on condition. It features 8 glass elements and the eye relief is about 14mm, which is borderline for eyeglass wearers. Of course, this is a 2" eyepiece.
With my OIII filter the Dumbbell nebula was just superb and worth the cost of the eyepiece alone. It was great on clusters, nebulas and galaxies alike. M31 and M32 were wonderful. I just have to get one of these for myself! For me this is the very best eyepiece I've ever looked through and was sorry I had to give it back.Sort by
