Is anyone making plans to observe the total solar eclipse in the USA on August 21, 2017?

The last one I saw was in Kenya, East Africa in 1980. I figure this upcoming one in 2017 may be my last best chance to observe a total solar eclipse so close to home. It'll still require me driving some 800 miles (1300 km) to the eclipse centerline, depending on where I choose to observe from. (Presently, I'm thinking somewhere in the state of Wyoming - a respectable drive from Smogville.)

I'm thinking of bringing my TV-102 OTA and Losmandy GM-8 mount. If you think you will observe this eclipse, what would you use to observe and/or image it? Or would you simply prefer to lay back in a comfy camp chair and observe this spectacle naked eye or with binoculars?

I definitely plan to observe it. I'll probably be observing with the naked eye for most of it and likely try to capture a few photos. It's too great of an event not to try to snag a few photos ;)

Yea I see on various other sites people are already planning a year in advance for this event. I know solar film will probably be a hot commodity in the coming year. It would probably be in peoples best interest to start thinking about their solar viewing capabilities here in the near future.

We will try to get up our product measurement table for telescope dew shield sizes so people can also purchase the correct size Baader AstroSolar Filter.

I just realized I said naked eye. I probably thought of the lunar eclipse. Not sure a solar eclipse with the naked eye would be good for my eyes... I'll definitely be using solar film haha.

Haha, a naked eye observation might not be advisable, LewC ;). I plan on observing the event from the Cherokee Reservation in N.C. The total eclipse line sweeps right through there. I may bring my Orion Mak 127 and solar filter, but I will def bring a lawn chair, solar eclipse glasses and my powwow drum!

Yeah I wasn't in my right mind when I originally replied. Pretty sure I was thinking of the lunar eclipse at the time. That or I was thinking I had solar film contacts .
