My word! You've actually heard of this place? Who'd a thunk it! And yes - that would be my place. Before it went down as parents seemed to have abandoned sending their kids to what was like a liberal-arts college for highly advanced students who couldn't or wouldn't be bothered with the idiocy of their towns' public-school systems - which I could write a thick book about my personal reasons! And I just might!

What did you hear about the Palfrey Street School at 119 Palfrey Street? And how did you hear?

    Curious -

    D.

walked by it all the time. I was a product of Watertown High.
If I didn't walk through the woods behind Victory I trudged up and over Palfrey.
The place has been restored and I think it one big house.
I am 50 and lived in this town for 48 of them 2 years in Newton 1 town over.

Yeah - I've been by there a few years ago. I think it's now a girl's school? Interesting history. It used to be a nursing-home before it became Palfrey Street School in 1966. It's apparantly haunted by the ghost of an old woman who died there, but didn't leave. Many people have seen her. I spent many nights there - working in my chem. lab - but I wasn't 'visited.' Wished I was!

The founder and then-director of the school was Ned Ryerson - of the ultra-wealthy Ryerson Steel Corporation. But Ned was the 'black-sheep' of the family, going into philanthropy with things like Palfrey Street School. His grandfather froze in the North Atlantic aboard the R.M.S. Titanic.

And Ned was one of the people who saw the 'ghost' up on the 2nd. floor one night - it didn't notice him. It was looking out the window of what had become Carol's math-center. Everyone was on first-names there. We'd abandoned the pompous 'Mister this' and 'Miss that.' We threw all conventions out the window! That crap wouldn't have flown in the place. When Ned had to retire do to his going blind, the more-conventional women demanded to pick a replacement - and did...

Tim was an administrator from the Arlington Kindergartens. He tried to bring-back convention. Wetook his car from the parking-lot/drive-way. Carried it into the old horse-stables & carriage-house. And hid it. Tim then began to realize he was NOT in charge. WE were. :D

I think he'd have gotten on well with the 'ghost.' Until he came to conclude it was dead - maybe by walking through a wall or something similar. As was - he resigned. :p

    'Ex-Wife' eh?

I'll bet that retired ball-player would agree the place is indeed 'haunted.' :p

Interesting, if esoteric, information on the house & history. This is how legends are created!
