A fellow astronut just bought an Orion StarShoot G3 imager. At the scope, he connects it to an Acer convertible notebook / detachable tablet running Windows 10. After each session, he has to reload the Orion software, which is supposed to be Win10 compatible, and the ASCOM drivers! He's got a ticket open with Orion, but they say it's the first such issue reported.

I still use my old Orion StarShoot II with my Windows XP laptop, and have had no problems.

Have y'all had software issues with Orion cameras?

I don't have direct experience, but our in house astrophotographer was describing a similar issue with drivers on windows 10. His issue wasn't with the Orion camera but with the new Revolution Imager. He is not in the office today but I will have to ask him if he ever got it resolved.

The main suggestion I gave him was to run the application in compatibility mode. You can see how to go about doing this below

I've been hearing complaints of many astro-software systems not working under '10.' Despite MicroShaft's assertions to the opposite. Rather than playing Russian-Roulette with my software, I'm safeguarding my computers from being forcibly converted to '10' by MSN's dirty-tricks dept.

    Good luck, folks -

I loaned him my Thinkpad for the weekend. I bet it'll run on XP. I've been thinking about a new laptop for better resolution & focusing with my imagers, but it's tough to get one with Windows 7 - unless I build it myself.

There were a lot of issues with 10 in the beginning for me. Eventually I sorted it all out or a few dozen Window's updates had fixed it. Running in compatibility mode as @george had stated usually fixed most software issues in the past. I know I had a ton of compatibility issues from XP to 7 as well.

@Bomber Bob if you really want a laptop with windows 7 you can probably still find them on ebay. Alternatively just buy a copy of windows 7 and install it on one. Just be sure not to get sucked into automatically updating to Windows 10.

I've had this problem. I was at the Connecticut Star Party, connected everything up, and fired up my netbook running XP. Boom! Driver installation!

Fortunately, I was able to get a WiFi signal and download them from the Orion support page.

Since then I've always carried an extra copy of the driver disks to the field. Just like extra batteries.

I have experienced the same issues with Windows 10 and my G3 camera ran the compatibility check and locked it to Windows 8, it does run better but quits every once in awhile while grabbing images. I was told by another forum to try SharpCap which is a free download and I ran the camera as a test in the house which seems to work fine and is a lot easier to navigate the controls.

If anyone reading this is part of the masses who are being bombarded with Windows 10 trying to install itself on your 'puter, or are simply tired of the constant nagware assaults on you and would like a way to stop such dead in it's track, send me a p.m. I'll point you to a very simple - free - software-program to install that puts an end to it. And does absolutely nothing else to your computer. You can change your mind, of course, at anytime and de-activate/remove the program.

I'd post the link, but I'm unsure if that would be cool with our hosts here in A-C.

    Best wishes -

    Dave

As long as is helpful and related to the topic you can post the link. The one thing I must ask that we do not post links to software that could be considered illegal or infringe on someone's copyright. Also that such software or the site that is hosting it, does not contain malware.

Thank you George. This being said - I'll post the link and a brief explanation:

This link takes you to ULTIMATE OUTSIDER. This site is operated by the person who has created the program I'm alluding to - Get Windows 10 Control-Panel, abbreviated to GWX Control-Panel. And this is the download you want.

All this software does is finds all of the software that MicroSoft has already loaded into your computer, often by hitching a ride on regular updates, that pave the way for nagware to send blinking reminders to GET WINDOWS X. Or, worse still, in many cases just loading it while your busy doing something else. GWX Control-Panel removes and blocks all of this from returning.

You can just turn it on (read the instructions) and forget it. If you decide to get Windows 10 later on - just turn it off. Or remove it. Simple as that.

No malware aboard. No sneaky other trash piggy-backing in on it. It only does this one thing. Most people who have installed this are amazed at how utterly simple it is, and how fast all the annoying Windows 10 garbage was gone. Obliterated - as one character called it's demise. :D

So here you be & yes, it's free:

"Free at last! Free, at last!..."

I sure wish I would've known about this before I got my I5 Asus , My older 08' OS on my astronomy computer handles everything but, only changing the compatability setting for that specific program to run . Some things run fine and others just bugger around " like cameras" and certain software. Good heads up fellas
