After a quick look with binoculars at the Orion Nebula and the other features in and around the Sword of Orion, I tried to capture the same view with a quick snapshot through a DSLR. This view shows the Sword region framed against tree limbs over Washington, D.C. It's amazing what modern DSLRs can do! This is almost within the realm of a hand-held shot...

Taken with an unmodified Nikon D750 with Nikkor 70-200 mm f/4 lens at 200 mm, 2 seconds, ISO6400.

That is a cool shot. The tree limbs are a nice touch. I can even see a little color in the nebulosity.

That is incredible for a 2 sec exposure!! Imagine if you attached a 2" UHC filter to the front of that lens!!

From the location of the take, the level of detail is both amazing and encouraging! Encouraging as it may just compel others' to dust of that old camera and give it a go.

We can hope, at least. Thanks, Brian!

I agree it's a nice picture, the nebula between the trees.

Bill - I will indeed give it a try with a UHC filter (actually an Optolong L-Pro filter) to see what I can pull out. A little guiding would help also so I can set the shutter a little longer.
