Here is a Sony Handycam shot of the August full moon, also known as the Fruit Moon by the Cherokee people of the Southeastern United States, and the Sturgeon Moon by the Native peoples of the U.S. Great Lakes region. The Fruit Moon was so named because it occurred during the season of the ripening of fruit. The Sturgeon Moon was so named because it occurred during the peak of the sturgeon fish in the Great Lakes. Enjoy some original Native American-inspired music on Native flute, powwow drum and ankle bells as you watch the August moon slowly rise. The musical selection is called "The Gathering", from my collection of Native American-inspired pieces, TSALAGI CITIZEN, available here: http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/wodigewehali

Haunting - as it should be.

    Thank you, Reggie!

I am enclosing a Pdf. I made from an article aways back. It gives other names for the Moon each month. Fear not - I scanned (always do) it with several things:

    Traditional Full Moon names.pdf

I'd be very interested for any others you may have around.

I saw the Moon tonight for a few minutes at magnifications ranging from 128.5x to 300x. I call this Moon the 'Obscured by Rubbish Transparency and Eventually by Huge Dark Clouds after only 15 mins Observing August Moon'.

Cool pdf, Dave. Thanks. There's so many different names for the monthly full moons. As you already know many of them come from Native folklore. Each nation had its own classifications and wisdom. I love this stuff!

That's how the moon looks tonight, Mak. I'm glad I had a break in the clouds last night to get a good shot.

Yes, the night before was good for me too and I had a good couple of hours of lunar viewing. It's raining this morning, which explains the poor transparency last night. Full Moons aren't the best time for detail but I did see some interesting Terminator shadows on the emerging limb.

I also love the names and definitions of the people. Such as the Lakota - which translates to 'The People of the Morning Star.'
