Manufacturer Description

Neutral density filters are excellent filters to reduce the overall brightness of an image to cut down glare while viewing bright astronomical objects through a telescope. They are useful for splitting binary systems, comfortably observing the moon, or stacking with other planetary filters. ND filters retain true color balance of the objects being observed since all wavelengths are transmitted uniformly over the entire spectrum.

This ND96-0.9 neutral density filter allows 13% of the visible light to pass through. It has a standard 2" male filter thread (M48x0.75) so it can be screwed on to virtually any astronomy eyepiece or accessory that has 2" filter threads. It also features a standard 2" female filter thread on the other side, so it can be stacked with additional filters. Comes in a protective plastic storage box. Made in China.

      4.0 Good Full Moon Filter

      Pros:

      Low price,Functional

      Cons:

      Comments:

I used this filter to embrace the 22 Jun'13 "Super Moon" using a 100mm f/10 refractor with great success. I say "embrace" because lunar brightness tends to wash out most deep-sky objects and there were also some scattered thin clouds about, so not much else could be enjoyed telescopically. A medium-power 60-deg eyepiece was used so Luna filled 80-90% of the FOV -- without the filter the view was very bright.

My achromatic refractor shows a violet edge on bright objects, such as this full moon, but the filter almost completely eliminated it by reducing the overall brightness. Viewing a full moon also makes the features look very different (less detailed) from views on other nights, but this filter allowed a relaxed view of different surface shadings and of bright rays/crater edges. I spent an hour with this filter just pleasantly looking at lunar features.

Because of the thin clouds there was some scattered light, but as they moved I could see that one side of the moon had a darker background than another -- meaning that the filter doesn't seem to scatter much light. The finish of the housing surface is smooth and flat black, with both male and female threads. The filter may not thread every manufacturer's 2-inch/48mm accessory, but it worked on mine.

It arrived in a square, foam-bottomed plastic storage case that provide good protection. One should be careful about the incoming filter surface, for it has only a very slight recess in its housing and it may become scratched if one is careless about where it is placed.

This filter works well for viewing the full moon.

      5.0 Best Value Product

      Pros:

      Lightweight,Strong Construction,Easy to Use,Quality Lenses

      Cons:

      Comments:

The Agena neutral density filters are truly the 'Best Value' on the market. There are many similar products on the market, but consider two things: First, Agena products are based on quality and a great reputation. Second, these filters are competitively priced.

      5.0 Turn The Moon Down!

      Pros:

      Easy to Use

      Cons:

      Comments:

I got one of each of the available strengths to match up with my ES 2 inch 100 degree eyepieces. Moon watching in my 12" dob is now very comfortable.

5.0 Good for full lunar disk observation

      Pros:

      Lightweight,Easy to Use

      Cons:

      Comments:

Perfect when the moon is full (or almost full) and you want to observe its greater features. It prevents the blinding glare of the full moon. I use it as part of my moon studies.

      5.0 Great moon filter

      Pros:

      Cons:

      Comments:

This filter is excellent for viewing the moon. Really lowers the brightness to make it more tolerable, without cutting out any surface detail. I use this with my 10" dob, and everyone who's looked with & without the filter has said the filter greatly enhances the view of the moon.
