Manufacturer Description

New model with twist lock adapter instead of set-screws.

For observers who want to power-up their 2" eyepieces, the Antares model 2UBSTL barlow lens with twist lock offers a 1.6x increase in magnification and reduced spherical aberration with all oculars. With a clear aperture of 1.64" (41.8mm) and a short length tube, this fully multicoated achromatic design will work with telescopes with the 2" format, including those using a 2" diagonal.

This new version of Antares' popular 2UBS barlow features an integrated twist-lock adapter / clamping mechanism to securely center and hold your eyepiece. The inner compression ring is made of polypropylene and will not mar your eyepieces.

Features edge-blackened elements, and internal baffling. When used with a diagonal, this barlow will provide approximately 2.4x if placed before the diagonal or 1.6x if inserted into the diagonal.

Specifications:

  • Barrel size: 2" / 50.8mm
  • Magnification factor: 1.6x
  • Type: Achromatic
  • Coatings: Fully multicoated, Blackened lens edges
  • Clear aperture = 1.64" / 41.8mm
  • Weight: 9.2oz / 261g
  • Total length: 2.87" / 73mm (+/- 2mm depending on exact position of clamping stop)
  • Length of lower chrome barrel: 1.16" / 29.6mm
  • Length of upper black barrel: 1.71" / 43.4mm
  • Maximum width = 2.35" / 59.8mm
  • Filter threads: Yes (Standard 2" filter threads, M48x0.75)
  • End caps: Yes (1 - lower only) but subject to change without notice
  • Country: Assembled in Canada using Japanese optics

Note that the use of any optical element like barlows and focal reducers changes the focus point of your telescope, requiring additional in-focus or out-focus travel. The exact amount of focus travel required will depend on the optics and mechanics of your specific set-up (telescope, diagonal (if used), barlow, and eyepiece). Hence, be aware that you may not be able to reach focus with all eyepieces or in all configurations with a given barlow.

Please note: A couple of tiny dust particles between lens elements, uneven lens edge blackening, very minor coating blemishes, or even a very small fine lens scratch or two are very common in this Antares product and must be accepted as normal. However, these will not impact optical performance.

3.0 Good quality, bit of a hassle to use

      Pros:

      Compact

      Cons:

      Difficult to Use

      Comments:

Bought this in 2013 I think. Lens quality is very good, but I found it a pain to use with the twist lock option in this one.
When using the twist lock part, the target in the scope would disappear because the scope would nudge when using the twist lock function. The other Antares version with the set screws is easier to use than this.

Bottom Line: Would you recommend this item? No
