Manufacturer Description
Sky and Telescope's Hot Astronomy Product for 2008! The Baader Planetarium Hyperion 68° Modular Eyepieces offer world-class performance and unique photo-visual features at an unheard of price. No longer do amateurs need to spend more on their eyepieces than their primary instrument, in order to get true high-end performance in a wide-field eyepiece. Not just a different branded version of their highly regarded cousins, the Hyperions have been totally redesigned to deliver better transmission, contrast, and useful new features. Baader Planetarium of Germany has worked hard to give the Hyperions the world's finest optical coatings, superb mechanics, and their unique multifunctional design.
As a visual eyepiece, the Hyperions deliver superb sharpness and color fidelity across their 68° wide, flat-field even in fast telescopes. In comparison to the Pentax XL eyepieces, the Hyperions matched the Pentax in every regard, and at just over 1/3 the price! From their superb on-axis and off-axis sharpness to their pitch-black high contrast field, the Hyperions really work. Viewing through a Hyperion is notably comfortable and relaxing due to their forgiving eye-position, 20mm of eye-relief, extra-large eye lens, and an optical design that is free of annoying 'kidney-beaning' and blackouts.
Some highlights of the Hyperion Eyepieces:
• Consisting of 8 elements in 5 groups (3.5mm - 21mm), the Hyperion optical design delivers outstanding sharpness and color correction over a 68° wide apparent field (65° for the 21mm). The Hyperion optical design has been chosen to deliver a exceptionally comfortable view, thanks to its 20mm of eye-relief, large eyelens, and a pupil free of the kidney-beaning and blackouts common in many wide field eyepieces.
• The new 24mm uses a different optical design and delivers outstanding performance over its 68° wide apparent field. It is totally free of blackouts and other annoying exit pupil behaviors, delivers long eye relief (17mm), virtually zero distortion, and is sharp to the edge even in fast telescopes. Its flat focal plane is particularly suited to very fast newtonians that use coma correctors. The 29mm field stop makes the 24mm Hyperion the widest 24mm eyepiece we know of. The 24mm Hyperion is also the smallest and lightest of the Hyperions.
• High grade water-white glasses are used throughout to deliver a crystal clear view with low scatter and excellent color fidelity, free of the yellow or bluish coloration imparted by many other eyepieces. Use of high-index glasses delivers low distortion and astigmatism, even on scopes as fast as f/4.
• Baader Planetarium has gone to great lengths to give the Hyperions the most advanced multicoatings ever used on amateur telescope eyepieces (please note: these are not the same coatings other manufacturers use on their similar clones of these eyepieces..). The Hyperion Phantom Group multi-coatings and coating equipment are proprietary to Baader and have been designed by German coating engineers specifically for the Baader Hyperions and optimized for each of the glasses used. These coatings are applied with the latest thin-film German coating equipment, training, and process controls. The result are coatings that truly rival the best in the world - including the famous Zeiss Abbe Orthoscopic! The difference is clearly visible - users report that the Hyperions clearly show fainter stars and darker sky than the competitive clones.
• The proprietary Hyperion housings have been engineered by Baader to incorporate careful opto-mechanical design and execution of internal baffling to eliminate stray light and ghost reflections. Uncapping the eyelens reveals a pitch black interior, with no distracting and contrast-robbing glints of light from unbaffled lens or metal surfaces.
• Superb fit and finish - eyepiece barrels are accurate to size, nicely machined, and hard anodized.
• Works in both 1.25" and 2" focusers. The 1.25" barrel is threaded for filters and kept short (0.94") to work well in binoviewers and spotting scopes. Baader's new housing incorporates a full-length 2" barrel (0.94" long) and provides a specially designed tapered locking recess. In addition, the Hyperion field stop locations have been re-designed and optimized to give the shortest focus position possible (important for binoviewer use).
• Soft folding rubber eyecups work for both normal and eyeglass users. Each Hyperion comes with protective lens caps and leatherette storage pouch.
• All Hyperions accept popular Astigmatism Correcting Lenses (not available in the USA though). The Hyperion eyelens housing is compatible with the full range of correcting lenses from 0.25 to 3.5 diopters. Observers with any astigmatism will really appreciate this feature, no longer needing to wear eyeglasses to see stars as true pinpoints. The long 20mm eye relief of the Hyperions works particularly well with these corrector lenses, without forcing the observer to press their eye close to the lens in order to see the entire wide field.
• Removable Negative Lens Element permits variable focal lengths using Baader's new 14mm and 28mm Finetuning Rings (sold separately). NOTE: The 24mm Hyperion is a different optical design and does not permit the use of Finetuning Rings to decrease focal length.
• Great for Binoviewing! Baader has tried most of the wide field eyepieces on the market that are suitable for binoviewing, and the Hyperions are at the top with the very best. When compared to some wide field eyepieces developed especially for binoviewing, they found the Hyperions were superior in every aspect: more comfortable view with better eye relief, smaller housing diameter at the eyelens gives more nose-room, better coatings (=better contrast), wider field, and half the cost. Their favorite wide field bino eyepieces are the 8/13/17/21/24mm Hyperions. The new 24mm Hyperion works superbly in binoviewers, and delivers the widest true field of any 24mm wide field eyepiece. Some users with narrow interocular separation may find it is necessary to remove the thin rubber M54 protective ring in order to increase the 'nose clearance'.
Baader Hyperions incorporate some unique and innovative aspects, which are designed to make them the ideal projection eyepieces for imaging applications:
• The optical design of the Hyperions enables them to work as an extremely sharp wide-field projection eyepiece for even large chip CCD and DSLRs.
• The eyelens barrel has been provided with two different external threads, M43 and M54 (these are covered by the removable rubber eyecups). A wide variety of adapter rings enables cameras to be directly and rigidly close-coupled for afocal projection photography, or variably extended for classical eyepiece projection imaging with T-Adapters and Extension Tubes. A series of 16 threaded rings (sold separately) provides compatibility with just about every digital (CCD/DSLR) and video camera made, even large and heavy 3-chip video cameras.
• The front negative lens element is designed to be removed (and exposes an M48 2" filter thread). This converts each Hyperion into a longer focal length high-quality projection eyepiece, giving the imager two choices of focal length with each eyepiece. NOTE: The 24mm Hyperion is a different optical design and does not contain a removable front element. However, the Front Barrel can still be removed in order to attach 2" filters in-between the 1.25" and 2" barrels. This is particularly convenient for users of 2" filters.

Excellent eyepiece!
Pros: Cons: Comments:I had previously ordered a 21mm Hyperion in 2017 and absolutely love the flat field and contrasty views. I ordered two more Hyperions during their Christmas sale 2018, a 13mm and 8mm to add to the collection. I must say, for medium power on galaxies and globular clusters i love the 13mm Hyperion. Just as with the others, the flat field, nice FOV and darkness of the background sky is amazing. I had previously purchased the 14 and 28mm rings giving me a complete range of power with the 3 eyepieces i now have. I have a whole collection of Nagler's and have compared these to the more expensive Cadillac of eyepieces. The Baader line compares very favorably to the Nagler's and for the money i consider the Hyperion's a ''Best Buy''. Last new moon was the first chance i had to use my new toys and i was lucky to have 3 nights of clear dew free conditions. I think i had the best view ever of M97, the Owl nebula with the eyes visible in the emerald green disk. M108 next door was also beautiful when using the 13mm eyepiece. Using the 21mm framed both galaxy and planetary in one field of view. This is on a 12.5'' Astrosystems Telekit yielding 77x. This magnification provided the best greenish color of the planetary nebula with a hint of the eyes visible, without a filter. I used the Hyperion's extensively comparing them with my other eyepieces and actually prefer my new acquisitons. I think the new coating technology is better than the coatings on the Nagler's, since most of those eyepieces are two decades old. I guess that is why the views are so contrasty with fainter stars seen when comparing with my older set of glass. So, like i said.......buy these and you will not be disappointed. Buy them on sale for $120 like i did during the Baader Holiday Sale and you will be satisfied beyond belief with your decision. These eyepieces Rock! Plus, i must add, Agena's method of shipping is GREAT. I can always order and within 3 days my shipment is at my doorstep, and i live in Georgia. Not bad coming from the west coast. I love Agena Astro.

Jan 8, 2017Nice!
Pros: Cons: Comments:These seeem to be pretty good, but in all honesty I've only used for the moon, and some terrestrial viewing. The EP comfortable to look though and seems to be pretty sharp. The fit and finish is ok, but not as nice as some. I do really like the options you have with these EP's.

Aug 15, 2014Quality Eyepiece
Pros:Quality Lenses,Easy to Use,Strong Construction
Cons: Comments:Love all the Baader Hyperion line, this one's no different. Works great in my 6in f/6.5 and my 8in f/10. I wear glasses and the eye relief is great, no kidney beaning and I can see the whole field. Highly recommend.

Mar 26, 2014Good purchase
Pros:Easy to Use,Strong Construction,Quality Lenses
Cons: Comments:I am quite happy with this purchase. The lens is quite flexible, with the various ways you can unscrew parts to get different magnifications. That being written, I mostly just keep it all together. Great eye relief and FOV. My daughter was overjoyed to see Jupiter and moons in this.

Nov 4, 2011Most Comfortable in its Class
Pros:Quality Lenses,Strong Construction
Cons:Heavy

Oct 28, 2011What an eyepiece!
Pros:Quality Lenses,Strong Construction
Cons: Comments:An excellent eyepiece. Wide field views, sharp, flat images nearly to the edge. Highly recommended. Many 13 mm eyepieces give you a feeling of tightness. There's none with this one. If Televues are too rich for your blood, check out Baader Hyperions. And note also that with a single eyepiece, you can have variable focal lengths.

Aug 4, 2011Another Amazing Eyepice!!
Pros:Strong Construction,Quality Lenses
Cons:None
Comments:First I picked up the 17mm and was so impressed I had to try another and I am not disappointed at all! Also, I have ordered four eyepieces from Agena!! I will be ordering the 21mm Hyperion in the near future and I am confident both Agena and the eyepiece will top notch!! Thank you very much Agena.

Jun 1, 2011Amazing Flexibility and Quality.
Pros:Quality Lenses,Accurate,Strong Construction
Cons: Comments:Excellent lens coating. Ability to receive T-2 adaptator.
Bottom Line: Would you recommend this item? Yes
Lens caps and pouch included.
Great flexibility and options.
Various focal lenght with fine tunning rings resulting in five eyepieces in one purchase.
(13mm, 10,8mm, 9,2mm, 8,1mm, and 22.9mm)
Minor problem with sealing that results in condensing moisture between the lens, requiring disassembling and cleaning. Keep it warm in pocket. This review was provided courtesy of AgenaAstro.com
Feb 11, 2011Affordable quality eyepiece
Pros:Strong Construction,Versatile,Quality Lenses
Cons: Comments:First I got the 13mm and liked it so much I got the 21mm. I was going to ad the 8mm and 17mm to my collection but I found the fine tuning rings and my two eye pieces are now capable of ten different focal lengths from 8mm to 32mm for about $250. TEN QUALITY EYE PIECES FOR $25 EACH - ONLY BAADER HYPERION WILL GET YOU THIS KIND OF A DEAL. I have looked through others that cost twice the money and I don't see twice the preformance. Bet you can't buy just one.

Dec 20, 2010What a beauty
Pros:Accurate,Compact,Strong Construction,Quality Lenses
Cons: Comments:Excels at everything you use it for. The focus rings make framing for imaging a snap. Build quality is very high.

May 1, 201013mm Hyperion and 12mm Televue Radian
Pros:Strong Construction
Cons: Comments:I recieve bouth the 13mm and 21mm Hyperion eyepieces from you. I am using them with a 14 inch F5 reflector. They are excellent, I can see dimer star than I can see with the 12mm TeleVue radian, the TeleVue has a little flater field but it is 60 degrees, and the hyperion is 68 degrees. I also recieved the 14mm finetuning ring with the eyepiece making it a 10.8 mm eyepiece and that made it have a much flater field with a little less eye relief, maybe 3mm. The real nice thing with the hyperion I can reduce the spacing from the secondary to the eyepiece over an inch, thus I can use a smaller secondary a 2.5 inch with the 14 inch reflector. I highly recommend the hyperion with low F ratio reflector and the finetunig rings. Clear Skeis Wally

Jan 19, 2010Good option for the price
Pros:Accurate,Quality Lenses,Strong Construction,Compact
Cons: Comments:This was my first upgrade from the stock eps that came with my scope. I use an 8" dob and this ep is my DSO workhorse as well as a fair planetary / lunar viewer.
Bottom Line: Would you recommend this item? Yes
I love the large lens and the exit pupil is amply large so that getting a good view is easy. Can't say that its tack sharp all the way to the edges, there is a fair bit of field curvature but your just gonna get that unless you start paying $500 a pop. Also love the adjustability between 1.25" and 2" barrels as I have different size filters, etc. that I can mix n match. (Despite what some sources say there is a slight focal length difference between the sizes.)
Overall it's an enjoyable, affordable piece of kit and I'll probably buy a few more focal lengths in this series. This review was provided courtesy of AgenaAstro.com

Nov 8, 2009AWESOME!!
Pros:Compact,Accurate,Quality Lenses,Strong Construction
Cons:None
Comments:I recently obtained one of these and I must say I wish I had bought one a lot sooner. This lens is so good!! The views are the best I've ever seen in my scope at this mag. Crystal clear, with stars bright and sharp against a black background. Simply incredible!
Bottom Line: Would you recommend this item? Yes
I use this with my XT8 Dobsonian and they work very well together when using my 1.25" adaptor with my 2" Crayford. Plenty of room to focus with my scope with that configuration. Also, just as advertised, I've experienced zero blackouts with this lens. That's something I was very critical about and so far haven't had any problems at all.
The lens itself is crafted with care. Very nice threading and barrel coatings, the best I've seen to date. The eyeguard is comfortable and adjustable for eyeglass wearers. The glass is flawless, the lens caps snug, and the included carrying bag a nice touch (though I prefer to use the very cool included bolt case courtesy of Agena).
I also purchased the fine tuning rings and they are awesome. Easy to switch in and out thanks to the perfect threading. The range of mags at my disposal with just this lens, my GSO 2" ED 2x Barlow, and two fine tuning rings is staggering. Absolutely cool, and the views hold up at all mags. I love this lens, give it a shot! This review was provided courtesy of AgenaAstro.com

May 28, 2009Best Bang for the Buck
Pros:Quality Lenses,Strong Construction,Accurate
Cons:Heavy
Comments:I have a few of the Hyperion eyepieces, I love them all. Not Naglers, but pretty darn close. Their mechanicle attatchment for afocl photography plus lower price puts them way ahead of the more expensive Stratus eyepieces. The LVWs cost twice a much and you really have to look to find any difference. Naglers do let a little more light trhough, and do have a wider view, but again you have to be looking for the difference to find it. Eye relief is better on the 13mm Hyperion than on the 12mm Nagler. I prefer the Hyperions for 9mm and shorter focal length eyepieces over Naglers. I also enjoy being able to use 1.25" filters on my 17mm-24mm Hyperions, vs. 2" filters on the longer focal length Naglers. That alone will save you a bunch more money.

May 27, 2009Excellent EP
Pros:Quality Lenses
Cons: Comments:I've looked through some very expensive glass thanks to my astronomy club, so I have some idea of what kind of difference a good EP can make. These might just be the best bang for the buck out there. I can compare it to some of the televue EPs, the Vixen NLVs, and a whole host of the cheap junk that comes in those starter kits or come with some telescopes. This EP holds it's own fairly well against some far more expensive EPs...Sure, it's no match for a 13mm Ethos, but it's also about 1/5th the cost. To date, it's given me the best view of the ring that I've seen in any EP so far. Throw in the ability to attach a camera directly to the EP and add spacer rings to customize the exact magnification...Baader has a winner with this line, and I intend to get the whole bunch eventually.

May 26, 2009Happy with everything but eyecup
Pros:Quality Lenses,Accurate
Cons:Hard to put eyecup on,Heavy
Comments:This gives very nice DSO views in both my 8" and my 13" Dobsonians, pulling in light that a cheap eyepiece might not. It is very comfortable. I'm sometimes uncomfortable with long eye-relief eyepieces, but I have had no blackout problems here. It's great.
Bottom Line: Would you recommend this item? Yes
On planets, occasionally it suffers from a bit of glare. And the eyecup is hard to put back on in in the dark if it falls off (or if one takes it off to hook up to a camera). This review was provided courtesy of AgenaAstro.com
May 26, 2009Don't hesitate, just buy it
Pros:Strong Construction,Accurate,Compact,Quality Lenses
Cons: Comments:A very quality lens, and everything that the hype promises. I was debating between the 17mm and 13mm and don't for a minute regret the stronger lens. It holds the image well and really pushes my 1250mm Dob to excellent viewing. I've become a real advocate of investing more in quality lenses before jumping to more aperture, and a good Baader Hyperion lens with an 8" or 10" scope is a really good combo for a modest price yet a really satisfying astronomical experience.

May 22, 2009Baader 13mm Hyperion
Pros:Comfortable to use,Well Corrected Images,Strong Construction,Quality coatings,Great Eye Relief
Cons:None
Comments:I received the Baader 13mm Hyperion which is a premium ocular of this quality. This eyepiece fits both 2" & 1.25" focusers. Galaxies and globulars are striking with the 13mm Hyperion in my 12.5" F5 Discovery PDHQ Dob. I really like the performance of this eyepiece and I give it a A+ for its optical quality. Star images are pinpoint sharp to the edge and I detected very little internal reflection or false color. With the 13mm I easily made out 6 stars in the Trapezium in M42, and definately made out the Cassini division in Saturn's ring system along with some banding on the planet itself. With the addition of Baader's Finetuning Rings, each eyepiece can function as four eyepieces! The finetuning rings are 14mm & 28mm, 2" OD and threaded M48 (filter thread) on each end so they can be installed in-between the removable front negative element and main body. The added spacing decreases the focal lengths which increases magnification. This is really a well thought out eyepiece system. I recommend these eyepieces to anyone with a scope as fast as F5, or anyone who wants a premium eyepiece that wont break the bank!

Apr 15, 2009My new favorite eyepiece
Pros:Quality Lenses,Accurate,Strong Construction
Cons: Comments:The 13mm Hyperion has become my new favorite EP. The wide AFOV is great for locating objects in the sky, esp. planets. I'm no expert, but Saturn and Jupiter appear clearly across the entire field of view, and since the view is so wide, I don't need to move my dobsonian so often.
Bottom Line: Would you recommend this item? Yes
I use the Hyperion with both the 14mm and 28mm fine tuning rings, and highly recommend them. With both attached my EP goes from 13mm focal length to about 8mm. When used with my barlow, I can easily get down to 5mm and 4mm, but still enjoy the large FOV. The 13mm Hyperion is just a great all-around EP.This review was provided courtesy of AgenaAstro.com

Nov 19, 2008Baader 8mm Hyperion
Pros:Excellent Characteristics,Great value for the price
Cons:Large and bulky for 8mm,Slight Coma
Comments:For those of you that have trouble buying high dollar eyepieces I would suggest you take a serious look at the 8mm Hyperion. This eyepiece is a great performer on all objects I used it on. While it's definitely not a Nagler or Pentax XL, for the money it's a terrific buy. It's a terrific overall, general use eyepiece for price performing well on planets, the Moon, and DSOs alike.
Bottom Line: Would you recommend this item? Yes
The eyepiece is sturdy and ruggedly built with great fit & finish. It is a large eyepiece that's as large as some of my 2" eyepieces but not exceptionally heavy for its bulk (13.5oz) and, in fact, fits 2" focusers with its new housing that has a full-length 2" barrel with a tapered locking recess. It also has the advantage of being used as a 6.9, 6, 5, and 4.3mm eyepiece by using extensions. In rough field measurements, I confirmed the 68This review was provided courtesy of AgenaAstro.com
