Manufacturer Description
Sky and Telescope's Hot Astronomy Product for 2008! The Baader Planetarium Hyperion 68° Modular Eyepieces offer world-class performance and unique photo-visual features at an unheard of price. No longer do amateurs need to spend more on their eyepieces than their primary instrument, in order to get true high-end performance in a wide-field eyepiece. Not just a different branded version of their highly regarded cousins, the Hyperions have been totally redesigned to deliver better transmission, contrast, and useful new features. Baader Planetarium of Germany has worked hard to give the Hyperions the world's finest optical coatings, superb mechanics, and their unique multifunctional design.
As a visual eyepiece, the Hyperions deliver superb sharpness and color fidelity across their 68° wide, flat-field even in fast telescopes. In comparison to the Pentax XL eyepieces, the Hyperions matched the Pentax in every regard, and at just over 1/3 the price! From their superb on-axis and off-axis sharpness to their pitch-black high contrast field, the Hyperions really work. Viewing through a Hyperion is notably comfortable and relaxing due to their forgiving eye-position, 20mm of eye-relief, extra-large eye lens, and an optical design that is free of annoying 'kidney-beaning' and blackouts.
Some highlights of the Hyperion Eyepieces:
• Consisting of 8 elements in 5 groups (3.5mm - 21mm), the Hyperion optical design delivers outstanding sharpness and color correction over a 68° wide apparent field (65° for the 21mm). The Hyperion optical design has been chosen to deliver a exceptionally comfortable view, thanks to its 20mm of eye-relief, large eyelens, and a pupil free of the kidney-beaning and blackouts common in many wide field eyepieces.
• The new 24mm uses a different optical design and delivers outstanding performance over its 68° wide apparent field. It is totally free of blackouts and other annoying exit pupil behaviors, delivers long eye relief (17mm), virtually zero distortion, and is sharp to the edge even in fast telescopes. Its flat focal plane is particularly suited to very fast newtonians that use coma correctors. The 29mm field stop makes the 24mm Hyperion the widest 24mm eyepiece we know of. The 24mm Hyperion is also the smallest and lightest of the Hyperions.
• High grade water-white glasses are used throughout to deliver a crystal clear view with low scatter and excellent color fidelity, free of the yellow or bluish coloration imparted by many other eyepieces. Use of high-index glasses delivers low distortion and astigmatism, even on scopes as fast as f/4.
• Baader Planetarium has gone to great lengths to give the Hyperions the most advanced multicoatings ever used on amateur telescope eyepieces (please note: these are not the same coatings other manufacturers use on their similar clones of these eyepieces..). The Hyperion Phantom Group multi-coatings and coating equipment are proprietary to Baader and have been designed by German coating engineers specifically for the Baader Hyperions and optimized for each of the glasses used. These coatings are applied with the latest thin-film German coating equipment, training, and process controls. The result are coatings that truly rival the best in the world - including the famous Zeiss Abbe Orthoscopic! The difference is clearly visible - users report that the Hyperions clearly show fainter stars and darker sky than the competitive clones.
• The proprietary Hyperion housings have been engineered by Baader to incorporate careful opto-mechanical design and execution of internal baffling to eliminate stray light and ghost reflections. Uncapping the eyelens reveals a pitch black interior, with no distracting and contrast-robbing glints of light from unbaffled lens or metal surfaces.
• Superb fit and finish - eyepiece barrels are accurate to size, nicely machined, and hard anodized.
• Works in both 1.25" and 2" focusers. The 1.25" barrel is threaded for filters and kept short (0.94") to work well in binoviewers and spotting scopes. Baader's new housing incorporates a full-length 2" barrel (0.94" long) and provides a specially designed tapered locking recess. In addition, the Hyperion field stop locations have been re-designed and optimized to give the shortest focus position possible (important for binoviewer use).
• Soft folding rubber eyecups work for both normal and eyeglass users. Each Hyperion comes with protective lens caps and leatherette storage pouch.
• All Hyperions accept popular Astigmatism Correcting Lenses (not available in the USA though). The Hyperion eyelens housing is compatible with the full range of correcting lenses from 0.25 to 3.5 diopters. Observers with any astigmatism will really appreciate this feature, no longer needing to wear eyeglasses to see stars as true pinpoints. The long 20mm eye relief of the Hyperions works particularly well with these corrector lenses, without forcing the observer to press their eye close to the lens in order to see the entire wide field.
• Removable Negative Lens Element permits variable focal lengths using Baader's new 14mm and 28mm Finetuning Rings (sold separately). NOTE: The 24mm Hyperion is a different optical design and does not permit the use of Finetuning Rings to decrease focal length.
• Great for Binoviewing! Baader has tried most of the wide field eyepieces on the market that are suitable for binoviewing, and the Hyperions are at the top with the very best. When compared to some wide field eyepieces developed especially for binoviewing, they found the Hyperions were superior in every aspect: more comfortable view with better eye relief, smaller housing diameter at the eyelens gives more nose-room, better coatings (=better contrast), wider field, and half the cost. Their favorite wide field bino eyepieces are the 8/13/17/21/24mm Hyperions. The new 24mm Hyperion works superbly in binoviewers, and delivers the widest true field of any 24mm wide field eyepiece. Some users with narrow interocular separation may find it is necessary to remove the thin rubber M54 protective ring in order to increase the 'nose clearance'.
Baader Hyperions incorporate some unique and innovative aspects, which are designed to make them the ideal projection eyepieces for imaging applications:
• The optical design of the Hyperions enables them to work as an extremely sharp wide-field projection eyepiece for even large chip CCD and DSLRs.
• The eyelens barrel has been provided with two different external threads, M43 and M54 (these are covered by the removable rubber eyecups). A wide variety of adapter rings enables cameras to be directly and rigidly close-coupled for afocal projection photography, or variably extended for classical eyepiece projection imaging with T-Adapters and Extension Tubes. A series of 16 threaded rings (sold separately) provides compatibility with just about every digital (CCD/DSLR) and video camera made, even large and heavy 3-chip video cameras.
• The front negative lens element is designed to be removed (and exposes an M48 2" filter thread). This converts each Hyperion into a longer focal length high-quality projection eyepiece, giving the imager two choices of focal length with each eyepiece. NOTE: The 24mm Hyperion is a different optical design and does not contain a removable front element. However, the Front Barrel can still be removed in order to attach 2" filters in-between the 1.25" and 2" barrels. This is particularly convenient for users of 2" filters.

A beautiful modular design that
Pros: Cons: Comments:A beautiful modular design that I am using for high power views. The field of view is sharp and contrasty in both the 17 mm and 21.8 mm configurations. Nice touches like multiple end caps abound.

Jun 13, 2017Excellent Eyepiece
Pros: Cons: Comments:I added this, my first Baader eyepiece, and I am very pleased with the quality and the big difference that I see from my other eyepieces. The wide angle gives a much better viewing experience. I intend to purchase a Hyperion for to replace my longer focal length eyepieces in the future.

Oct 9, 2015Great Eyepiece!
Pros:Quality Lenses,Easy to Use,Accurate,Strong Construction
Cons: Comments:This is a great eyepiece. It is very clear and shows no distortion until the very edge of the FOV in my XT8. I have used it without the first lens group (21.8mm FL), with a 2" filter installed (14.6mm FL) and with the 28mm FTR (10.8mm FL)... It provides deep, immersive views at each focal length. I am very happy with this purchase. I think it may be the jewel of the Hyperion lineup.

Jul 4, 2015Amazing quality, this is my best eye piece, period.
Pros:Quality Lenses,Accurate,Easy to Use,Strong Construction
Cons: Comments:I absolutely love this eye piece, extremely clear & sharp viewing out of my 5-inch and 10-reflectors.
Bottom Line: Would you recommend this item? Yes
Any qualms about spending big money on a Baader Planatarium EP were immediately erased with my first view, top quality, sharp views even in my cheap 5-inch reflector.
I love being able to use in 1-1/2 to 2-inch focusers. Pick up a B.P. 14-mm fine tuning ring for more versatility.
It's a heavier EP, solid construction, made with precision.
I debated spending the money, but I'm glad I did, it's my primary viewing eye piece now.
I'll describe the difference between the eye pieces that came with the telescopes and the B.P Hyperian like this; instead of "looking" at celestrial bodies, I'm now "seeing" them. This review was provided courtesy of AgenaAstro.com
Mar 30, 2015Problem with hyperion 17mm eyepiece
Pros:Strong Construction,Quality Lenses
Cons:Heavy,Difficult To Focus
Comments:I finally got to use this eyepiece several months after I purchased it. I tried it on a 10" dob and to get it into focus was a bit of an adventure. It had to be placed so close to the end of the focuser that it almost fell out. Couldn't get it to focus using the fine tuning rings. The image without the fine-tuning rings was very sharp,so no complaints there.
Bottom Line: Would you recommend this item? No
A more serious issue was the discovery of a loose lens. I could definitely hear a lens rattling around inside the eyepiece when I shook it.
Something missed out on the Loctite during construction I suppose.
There are no instructions whatsoever, that come with the eyepiece, though you can find them (and videos) online. You should not have to look elsewhere to find out all the ways the eyepiece can be used.
I would recommend it to a friend but don't bother with the fine tuning rings. This review was provided courtesy of AgenaAstro.com
Mar 26, 2015An amazing eyepiece
Pros:Quality Lenses,Value
Cons: Comments:Man alive, this is a serious eyepiece, I got crystal clear views, so sharp, I was stunned. Granted, I've only got an economy 5-inch reflector, this Baader 17MM eyepiece blew away a quality plossl to smithereens, and all other eyepieces.
Bottom Line: Would you recommend this item? Yes
The modular feature with the 28MM spacer worked flawlessly, so impressed, and so cool to have multiple focal lengths in one eyepiece. I was hesitant to spend the money, figuring I would be dissapointed as usual but not this time, all the great reviews were 100% correct, this is a fabulous eyepiece.
Thank you Agena, lightning fast shipping, I'll do business with you again. This review was provided courtesy of AgenaAstro.com
Jun 16, 2014Fantastic-good value lens
Pros:Easy to Use,Lightweight,Accurate,Quality Lenses,Strong Construction,Compact
Cons: Comments:Great compact, medium power, sharp viewing lens for planetary & deep sky observing.

Feb 5, 2013Excellent
Pros:Strong Construction,Easy to Use
Cons: Comments:This is just as great as all of the other reviewers have said. Its solid and ultra funtional design make it great for long sessions or just grabbing one lens to do it all for quick set ups. The eye relief is very good although it gets a little tight when you remove the 1.25" nosepiece. Optically its right there with the best plossl lenses and offers lots of function beyond a single focal length lens. And a quick plug for agena astro....They are simply the best!
Bottom Line: Would you recommend this item? YesThis review was provided courtesy of AgenaAstro.com
May 20, 2012Must have for serious astronomers
Pros:Very versatile,Quality Lenses,Accurate,Easy to Use
Cons:Loose lens rattles
Comments:This is a great eyepiece. I use it in an 8"SCT and the views at all focal lengths are superb. Obviously I have the fine tuning rings as well. 2" filters also change the focal length. It is super versatile and crisp to the edge. Huge lens and lots of eye relief, very comfortable. The only drawback for me was a loose lens inside (it rattles) but hasn't affected performance. Love it.

Feb 25, 2012Nice Eyepiece
Pros:Quality Lenses,Strong Construction,Great optics
Cons:Heavy
Comments:Very nice eyepiece, good FOV and great contrast with shapness all the way to the edge. The eye relief is also really nice, for the price you just can't beat this eyepiece.
Bottom Line: Would you recommend this item? YesThis review was provided courtesy of AgenaAstro.com
Oct 28, 2011A very good eyepiece
Pros:Accurate,Strong Construction,Easy to Use,Quality Lenses
Cons: Comments:Not much to say other than I am completely satisfied with this and the 24mm I also bought. The 68 degree AFOV is more than good enough for my 71 year-old eyes. There may be a slight bit of edge distortion, but it may not be the EP, and in any event it's not objectionable to me in the least. It has become my most used EP.

Aug 4, 2011Amazing!!!
Pros:Quality Lenses,Strong Construction,Accurate
Cons: Comments:First light was the Lagoon nebula and all I can say is "WOW" and it just got better from there. Through my 8" F6 dob in the view was so much better than through my plossls I was truly taken back. Add the fine tuning rings and you have 4 eyepieces to enjoy.
Bottom Line: Would you recommend this item? Yes
Well worth waiting for!!This review was provided courtesy of AgenaAstro.com

Nov 8, 2009Wonderful eyepiece.
Pros:Great Value,Accurate,Good Price,Quality Lenses,Strong Construction,Superb performance,Compact
Cons: Comments:I bought this eyepeice as a medium-to-low power eyepiece for my 8inch F5 dob.
Bottom Line: Would you recommend this item? Yes
The eyepeice has solid premium construction, a tad heavy (but to be expected with all the glass of a 8 element design), a nice soft eyecup, and comes with three caps (one for the eyeguard in the up position, and the other for the down position).
The views are spectacular. The eyepiece had sharp on-axis performance and nice contrast. Edge peformance is very very good. The outer 10% of the view showed bloatedness from my f5 mirror, but the other 85%+ was very sharp. This eyepiece fit very well between my 12mm nagler T4 and 22mm panoptic. Inspite of the low price, I found this eyepeice in the same league as these premium eyepieces. The eyelens is a monstrous 28mm, eye relief a comfortable 20mm. My two pet peeves were held at bay - a sharp, well-defined field stop and cool tones to reveal the moon in a brilliant white (no yellow tinge that I found in stratus). It barlows very well, and with a 3x meade telextender is a very nice planetary eyepiece.
One of the best values in eyepieces I have ever come across. I have previously owned naglers, panoptics, Ultima lx, vixen lvw, meade 4k UWAs and 5k UWAs and SWA eyepieces, and I can easily say that this eyepiece is in the same league as these. Highly recommended. This review was provided courtesy of AgenaAstro.com
Oct 20, 2009Great Viewing Experience
Pros:Quality Lenses
Cons: Comments:I don't have $300-$500 to purchase widefield eyepieces, so I searched high and low for an affordable alternative. I am VERY pleased with the field of view and the optics quality of this eyepiece. I highly recommend it.
Bottom Line: Would you recommend this item? YesThis review was provided courtesy of AgenaAstro.com
Aug 13, 2009Major step up from standard Plossls
Pros:Accurate,Quality Lenses
Cons: Comments:I use this in a 10" F5 Dob for casual visual observing.
Bottom Line: Would you recommend this item? Yes
This EP is a significant improvement over the GSO Plossls that came with my Dob.
This is a modular design that is two eyepieces in one, giving a 2" barrel 21.8 mm FL EP without the first group of lenses. However without the first group the EP barrel length is too short to allow focusing in my GSO type Dob. Without fully inserting the EP, it could be focused in my Dob, but the performance was disappointing. This may be due to some tilt because the EP was not flush with the focuser.
That aside, I am very pleased with the performance as a 17 mm EP, and have just purchased another from this excellent series. This review was provided courtesy of AgenaAstro.com

Jun 14, 2009Outstanding Value & Performance!
Pros:Usable FOV,Eye relief,Strong Construction,Quality Lenses,Contrast
Cons: Comments:I currently have four of the Baader Hyperions which I use in my 4" f7.75 APO refractor. The 17mm Hyperion is nothing short of perfection - this coming from someone with 25 years of observing experience encompassing everything from Konigs & Orthos to Naglers and Panoptics. The 17mm just disappears while you're using it. Virtually no scatter, ghosting or astigmatism. Very comparable to my Panoptic 24mm which has a cult following of it's own. It is that good in this scope. I would recommend this to anyone using a scope with a longer f ratio. I can not attest to it's performance in anything faster yet.
Bottom Line: Would you recommend this item? YesThis review was provided courtesy of AgenaAstro.com
Mar 28, 2009Best of the Bunch
Pros:Strong Construction,Quality Lenses
Cons: Comments:This is the best of the Hyperion line. With a true FOV about equal to the 21mm and 24mm Hyperion, yet more magnification, gives you sharper views within the same frame or area. This is my most used Hyperion. If you are only going to get 1, get this one. If you get 1, you will end up hooked on the quality and great views these EPs give. These even work well in my f4.5 scope. The only other EPs holding up in this scope are Naglers and Panoptics. Hyperions are a fraction of the cost.

Feb 10, 2009Hyperion 17mm and Agena
Pros:Strong Construction,Quality Lenses,Accurate
Cons: Comments:The Baader Hyperion 17mm is a fantastic eyepiece! Wanting to get the most bang for the buck, I choose the Hyperion because of it's wonderful reputation and overwhelmingly positive reviews on popular internet forums.
Bottom Line: Would you recommend this item? Yes
Being my first eyepiece with a 68 degree APOV, all I can say is wow! Compared to your standard 52 degree Plossl designs, it literally feels like you have fallen into the eyepiece and are floating up there with the stars!
With a good barlow, focal reducer, and the Baader 14mm and 28mm expansion rings, I have 12 eyepieces in one. I may never need another eyepiece.
I also wanted to comment on Agena and their service. I ordered over the internet and my product shipped within a few hours. They also responded to a question of mine within a few minutes of my order. When my order came, I was surprised to see a large plastic ("coke can") eyepiece case was also included! Wonderful service and I look forward to purchasing from Agena again. This review was provided courtesy of AgenaAstro.com

Feb 2, 2009Baader Planetarium Hyperion 17mm
Pros:Eye relief,FOV,Modular design
Cons:None
Comments:This eyepiece offers a great FOV of 68 deg. and very nice eye relief of 20mm. The views are very sharp and clear with no distortion in my f/5 scope.
Bottom Line: Would you recommend this item? Yes
The eyepiece can be used in my 1.25" or 2" focuser. The focal length can be changed when used in the 2" focuser as this is part of the modular design. The modular design is another item I like. By adding tuning rings, the focal length can be changed even more. This review was provided courtesy of AgenaAstro.com
Jan 8, 2009Best EP on the market for the price!
Pros:Accurate,Strong Construction,Quality Lenses
Cons: Comments:What can you say about German engineering! This EP is crisp out to the edges with no distortion. At [$] an EP as compared to a Tele Vue at over $500 there is no comparison in my book. I have looked through a Tele Vue and yes while it gives a picture that is unyielding the Baader EP gets so close that the saved $400 is icing on the cake. And construction of these EP's are really their strong point as well. Quality is top priority with this line! Go ahead and pick up this EP, you won't be sorry.

Nov 14, 2008Best Bang for the Buck
Pros:Accurate,Quality Lenses,Comfortable Eyepiece,Strong Construction
Cons: Comments:I've used my new 17mm Baader along side of my friends Pan and there was no difference to my eyes. At half the price these eyepieces are the best out there for the price. I can't find any used for more than $10 less than new, then you have shipping to pay, so go ahead and grab one now. If you ever do move up to an Ethos you can always sell these for about what you paid for them. That's because they are that good. Almost no coma even in my f4.5 scope. You have to look for it to even notice it. These are excellent eyepieces. Other than their size there is nothing bad about these eyepieces. They would be a bit heavy on a little 90mm or smaller scope. I love being able to swap them between my scopes without having to dink around with adaptors. My 16" uses a 2" focuser and my 8" uses a 1.25 focuser, and the Baader design lets them move from scope to scope with no problems. WARNING if you buy one you will be buying more. I'm certain you will fall in love with these eyepieces just like I have.

Oct 6, 2008WOW factor of the Baader Hyperion 17mm
Pros:Best Bang for the Buck
Cons:None found
Comments:I am always on the lookout for quality EPs for my 12" DOB. As an avid DSO seeker, I felt my EP collection lacking in the medium to low power catagory. While I felt I wasn't quite prepared to invest the price of a Nagler or Ethos, I did want an EP that could deliver the sharpest wide field image with a minimum of distortion. An EP with long eye relief was a consideration as well.
Bottom Line: Would you recommend this item? Yes
The area where I live is somewhat light polluted, so I expected that I would need to filter the Hyperion to gain the best view. This was not the case. I found that a quality nartrow band filter is the only filter I need to bring out the details in some of the dimmest nebulae and galaxies. My OII filter seems to darken the field excessively.
While I consider each of my EPs as being adequate for my most of my needs for its particular application, I am highly impressed by the quality of this EP.
Still, I needed a second opinion. One particular evening I was enjoying the sight of the Andromeda galaxy. My better-half has never taken a great interest in my stargazing habit, suggesting that many of the details of the objects I try to get her to see are merely a figment of my imagination. Her first glance through the Hyperion invoked a "WOW!". That expression was all that was required for me to realize I had spent my money wisely.
I would not hesitate to aquire more of these great EPs.This review was provided courtesy of AgenaAstro.com
