Manufacturer Description

Even before the disappearance of the famed Baader Genuine Orthoscopics in mid-2012, Baader Planetarium sought to develop a set of true Planetary eyepieces that was accessible for any amateur - without breaking their bank. Foregoing fancy (and costly) cosmetics, the new Classic Eyepieces deliver where it counts - performance. Their sharpness and contrast rival other 'planetary' eyepieces costing much more. To achieve this performance and value, Baader drew upon their extensive in-house knowledge and experience, combined with optical designs and processes leveraged from Zeiss.

Features of the new Classic Eyepieces:

  • Optical design and manufacturing specs based on the highly regarded Zeiss Jena 0.965" orthoscopics (not any Japanese or Chinese makes).
  • Fully multi-coated: All air-to-glass surfaces are coated with Baader's HT MultiCoatings, specifically matched to each substrate.
  • Excellent ergonomics: The innovative recessed volcano top provides clearance for eyelashes and enables a comfortably located eyepoint without the stray light problems of a full volcano top.
  • Integrated winged folding rubber eyecup: Eliminates distracting stray side-light, enabling full concentration on the object, as well as providing a thermally insulating and soft non-scratching top surface (ie, for eyeglass wearers). Also outstanding for BinoViewing. Rubber eyecup may be folded down or removed, if needed .
  • 52-deg apparent field of view (6/10/18mm Orthoscopics): Makes finding and centering objects at high powers easier than typical 40-45deg eyepieces.
  • Blackened lens edges; Parfocal.
  • Threaded to accept standard 1.25" astronomy filters.

      5.0 Great eyepiece

      Pros:

      Cons:

      Comments:

I bought this to compare its planetary and DSO performance to some other similar focal length eyepieces, and this is top notch. Extremely sharp and contrasty with great transmission.

I am unable to spot any meaningful difference between this my beloved 11mm TeleVue Plossl, except this eyepiece has much more eye relief and is much more comfortable to look through.

M51 spirality stands out in sharp relief, I can hold threshold stars more easily than in other eyepieces, there is no glare at all from the moon (meaning internal reflections are well controlled - not something all eyepieces do well at this price point), there is minimal scatter introduced by the eyepiece, and lunar and planetary detail are tack sharp.

If you are considering any Plossl around this focal length (even a TeleVue Plossl), then get this eyepiece instead. Optical quality is just as good, but much more comfortable to look through.

      5.0 What a Performer!

      Pros:

      Cons:

      Comments:

This eyepiece is a performer! It's super sharp, has a nice FOV and the build is excellent. The eye relief is fairly short but I don't care. The eyecups are also excellent!...the best orthos I've ever looked through.

4.0 Nice but short eye relief

      Pros:

      Lightweight,Compact,Accurate,Easy to Use,Quality Lenses,Strong Construction

      Cons:

      Short eye relief

      Comments:

I really like my 18mm Baader Classic Ortho, so I gave the 10mm version a try. Both the 18mm and 10mm versions have a 50 degree AFOV compared to 42 degrees like other Orthos. The extra AFOV helps with planetary viewing in my non motorized, non computerized scope. The outer edge of the view is slightly fuzzy in my f/4 reflector, but that's to be expected from any Ortho with more than 42 degrees AFOV. I can live with that. What I can't live with is the short 8mm eye relief. Eye relief is just too short for me, even with the eye cup removed. I took away 1 star for that.

      5.0 Great 10mm Baader Orthoscopic

      Pros:

Easy to Use,Lightweight,As Good As The Expensives,Quality Lenses,Compact

      Cons:

      Comments:

I use this EP in my 102mm f/9.8 Refractor and f/11 14" SCT. Use mostly on planets and the moon. Nice and sharp and easy to use. Nice eye relief and top is nicely shaped to give room for the eye lashes. Can't wait to use in my f/15 Mak-Cass once it shows up. I don't have any fast scopes so I can't comment on that, but I really think that these EPs are meant for fast scopes anyway. Haves used them on small tight DSO and they're great.

4.0 Finally a new, inexpensive ortho

      Pros:

      Well Worth The Price,Quality Lenses

      Cons:

      Hate The Flimsy Eye Guard

      Comments:

Look and feel could be better, but produces very nice images. Edge correction is great in F8 reflector. I really like the 50 degree FOV.
