A Solar safety film sheet is a very good product. I made various filter sizes for my photo/video equipment, it works fine - in sunny days. Guess, on Solar Eclipse day, skies were dark cloudy and no fun at all. Next time!!

      5.0 Best Solar Film

      Pros:

      Cons:

      Comments:

I've used this Baader film and the film from Thousand Oaks. I much prefer this Baader film.
The film from Thousand Oaks has a matte finish on one side that diffuses the light slightly, which makes it impossible to get a razor sharp focus on the sun. The edge of the sun looks soft and sunspot detail is lost.
This Baader film has a very small UV leak (0.0001, or 0.01%) around 360 nm, which is why it should be used with glass, like a camera lens, since glass attenuates UV.

      5.0 Nice product,glue well though.

      Pros:

      Cons:

      Comments:

This worked great for the eclipse -- both on telescope and telephoto lens. Be sure to glue it well to whatever mount you make though. I had a thin rim of material glued that came loose it the wind. I used super glue to reinforce it though, and all was good.

5.0 Excellent value, and prompt service

      Pros:

      Cons:

      Comments:

I'm extremely happy with this. Everyone was chasing glasses, and expensive solar filters for cameras, and all I had to buy was one sheet of filter. I made a filter for my binoculars, which was an absolute hit at the park where we watched the eclipse. I also made filters for two cameras, and I still have half the sheet left over for 2024.

      Pros:

3.0 A bit of a fiasco making filters.

      Pros:

      Cons:

      Comments:

This Baader Solar Film works well. The sun is off-white/bluish, which I guess is okay. Altogether, making filters from this film costs probably a little less than half the cost of glass filters, keeping in mind that you will need other materials than just the film. If you destroy too many filters in the process of making them, this film could cost more than buying glass filters.

This solar film is a bit delicate, so apparently not likely to be long lasting. The filters you make must be thoroughly checked before each use to make sure they haven't been damaged. If damage goes unnoticed, you can easily permanently damage your eyes. The filters must be stored in their own special, soft, container that will protect them from harm.

The filters are not so easy to make. A number of unforeseen things can go wrong. I'm pretty handy and all of the filters I made for my scope, finder, and 2 pair of binoculars worked. But not as nicely or as well made as I would like. This takes practice. So, be prepared to buy more film.

One thing, I didn't want the filters to be too loose and fall off of my scope or binoculars so, I made them fit snug. Too snug. Make them a bit loose. You can easily attach little wedges inside the ring of your homemade filter so that it will fit snugly to the tube of your scope, or the barrel of the binoculars.

This film is a bit expensive to be making throw away filters. If you want permanent solar filters, but glass ones. If you don't want the extra hassle of making filters, buy glass ones.

      5.0 Worked as expected

      Pros:

      Cons:

      Comments:

The film is every thin an light weight, so be very careful handling it. Don't be tempted to take it outside unless mounted in a frame as even a slight breeze will make make it hard to handle. Cutting the sheet was very easy (I made frames out of white styrene). The solar images produced through the filter are white, just as the product image suggests. This was used during the August 21, 2017 solar eclipse.

      5.0 Worked wonderfully!

      Pros:

      Cons:

      Comments:

The film worked wonderfully on my 600mm telephoto lens to capture the eclipse. The image was bright white, not dull yellow like the cheap eclipse glasses. Will definitely buy more for 2024.

Took pictures of the Solar Eclipse. They didn't turn out the greatest, but the problem was in my iPhone mount and not the filter.

5.0 Baader planitarium solar filter glasses

      Pros:

      Cons:

      Comments:

The quality of construction of Baader's filter is excellent. Much better than the filter (using baader film) made by another company. Like the solar viewing glasses too...color is more true to life. Also Agena delivered promptly and seem to be a good company that I would use again.

      Comments:

I purchased two pieces of Baader solar filter films (size 2.5in). They were delivered promptly. With these I built a solar filter (using 2 "cells") for my 8inch Celestron Nexstar telescope. It worked very well and I am very pleased by the results.

      Pros:

      Cons:

      Comments:

There's one or two tiny pockmarks on the films which causes refraction (halos). This is the first time I bought these, so I'm not sure if it's normal to have pockmarks on the surface of the films. Other than the pockmarks, the films work pretty well.

      Pros:

      Cons:

      Comments:

I love this material. It is in-expensive and as far as I am concerned the Solar views using this material are second to none. The downside is that it is fragile and you need to be pretty gentle with it. So far I've used the Baader Solar Film to make filters for telescopes and binoculars/

4.0 Baader AstroSolar Visual Solar Filter Film (ND 5) - 4" (101mm) Sq

      Pros:

      Cons:

      Comments:

I've used Baader AstroSolar film in the past. I'm generally pleased with the quality of the product and the results I get using it. It's claimed that the film does not have to be stretched taut across an opening and the image is not adversely affected by "waves" on the surface. This seems to be true. I've been told that the image obtained with a Herschel wedge is better, but since the wedge can only be used on a refractor, I have no way of checking this. The image obtained with the Baader film seems to be as crisp as one would get, for example, of an image of the moon. One precaution in using the film is to look at the sun through the film to make sure there are no pinholes on any part of it. Do this before mounting the filter on the telescope. Also, since it is a film, one has to be careful handling and storing it to prevent scratches, holes, and getting foreign material on it.

      Pros:

      Cons:

I have an 80mm short tube refractor. It has the removable cover on the lens cap, about 2" wide. I bought this film and attached it to the inside of the lens cap. Pros:

      Cons:

      Comments:

The "natural" light of Baader is personal preference I suppose but in my case this is needed to get the benefit out of using Baader Solar Continuum eyepiece filter in making things "pop." Other colored widebands are unsatisfactory in my experience when matched with the Baader eyepiece filter.

      5.0 Baader AstroSolar Film

      Pros:

      Cons:

      Comments:

I ordered a large amount of the solar film to make filters for all of my optics. I started out with my 8" Celestron Schmidt Cassegrain. Have to say, when i opened the roll and saw the pure quality of the film, I was pretty impressed. Although I immediately intimidated by how thin it was, i quickly learned how durable this stuff was. I found a set of directions online that were very simple to read and accurate. Gave the film a try, and voila, worked flawlessly. Very crisp pictures. Kind of odd seeing the sun so white, but definitely full of detail. I would definitely recommend the product. As for Agenda Astro, no complaints. Arrived when expected, packages well, and great value. Best around. Thanks

      5.0 Baader Astrosolar Film success

      Pros:

Following the instructions regarding mounting the film, I fabricated a simple holder that necks my 115mm f7 refractor down to 82mm out of craft materials and now I have a 1st class white light solar filter that works great and cost @ $25. Besides, it was fun to make.

5.0 Great for 2017 total solar eclipse in United States!

      Pros:

      Cons:

      Comments:

I captured the last one with a Nikon film camera and a special photographic piece of large black film for the little newspaper Inwas working for in Colby, Kansas. I was in my 20s. Now, at 61, I'll be doing it again at 61 with my digital Nikon camera for the small paper I work for in Gulfport, Florida. I'm making my own filter with an oatmeal box top for my 500mm camera lens (in addition, I'm also using a 2x doubler) and three pair of viewing glasses out of plastic safety glasses -- the kind used with power tools -- so two friends can join me on August 21, 2017. Here's hoping for clear skies! Thank you for your product as I no longer have access to a process film camera for a printing press in the digital age. That's the type of sheet film I used before developed to full photographic black.

      5.0 Baader AstroSolar Filter

      Pros:

      Cons:

      Comments:

I've been using Baader Planetarium's AstroSolar for several years now. I've used it for general solar observations, imaging of sunspot groups, eclipses, the transit of Venus in 2012 and the transit of Mercury in 2016. For white light solar astronomy, this stuff absolutely works. Images are sharp and detailed. The film itself is durable and will last a long time with proper care. If you are willing to spend the time to build your own filter cell, you can have an excellent front objective filter for the fraction of the cost of a manufactured unit. Building your own can offer great versatility. Use it on telescopes, finderscopes, spotting scopes, binoculars or even for a hand held viewer.

5.0 Material to build affordable eclipse viewing filters

      Pros:

      Cons:

      Comments:

I bought these well in advance for the August 21, 2017 total solar eclipse, as every filter source was back-ordered until a month too late for the 2012 Venus transit and the annular eclipse a month earlier.

You must follow the instructions for best results, and to avoid damage to the filter film. Nice true color filtering of the sun (or any other extremely bright source). Easy to set up and build a filter cell for your telescope, binoculars, and other optics for solar observation.

If you plan to attend the eclipse this year, you should order filters and optics NOW so you have plenty of time to thoroughly test your equipment. This stuff is economical enough you can get spare sheets, because there will be someone you are likely to encounter at the last minute who was unprepared.

These also work well as a high intensity LED inspection tool to spot hot and cold LEDs in a high output lamp.

5.0 Best of white light solar observing

      Pros:

      Quality Lenses,Lightweight,Accurate,Easy to Use,Strong Construction,Compact

      Cons:

      Need to make the cell

      Comments:

At first I bought it for Venus transit of 2012. Beside transits, it's a solution for sunspot observing and non-total solar eclipses.

It is a thin film, and you make a filter cell. Instructions included, easy with some cardboard and tape. Film looks fragile but it's sturdy unless used harshly. Also, it's very quality made, gives crisp and white color sun images.

I use it on my 60mm refractor, 8" dob (off-axis), camera, binoculars for sunspot observing and as solar eclipse glasses.

      5.0 Great solar film

      Pros:

      Easy to Use

      Cons:

      Comments:

The Baader solar film I ordered is for my Celestron C90 Mak, which serves as a grab and go scope. The film is 4"x4" and came with a simple instruction. I ordered it three days ago, and there it was in may mail box, a bit of surprise by Agena's speedy shipping process. The film is very light weight, and took me extra caution/effort in handling it. I did successfully mount it in the cardboard film holder I built. The result is satisfying especially when I observed the sun spots in the C90 for the first time using this film. Overall, it is a great product.

      5.0 Excellent for eclipse/transit viewing.

      Pros:

      Easy to Use,Lightweight

      Cons:

      Fragile

      Comments:

I bought a 6" square to make a filter for my Edmund Astroscan. A bit of work making a cardboard frame for the film and I had it ready for the Venus transit. Views through the film are as good as those through the glass filter I have for my 10" dob, and making one for my Astroscan allowed me to do some Venus Transit outreach in the parking lot of my office. The light weight makes it easier to use on a small scope than a glass filter would be.

      Pros:

      Easy to Use

      Cons:

      Comments:

The solar film works great for my 90mm Refractor. Seeing the sun and the sunspot detail expands my astronomical viewing capabilities without breaking the budget. It is a great way to get into solar viewing. Making the filter using the film was easy and inexpensive to do.

      High quality

      Cons:

      Comments:

      5.0 Inexpensive AND Excellent Performance

      Pros:

Inexpensive,Detailed views,Get to make the cell

      Cons:

      Need to make the cell

      Comments:

I cannot think of another way to get the same quality in a solar filter for anything close to the price. It comes with instructions for making your own cell, which is not difficult, and getting it in a sheet allows you to customize it to your own scope. I've made filters now for three scopes, from 72mm to five inches. I used them to view and take fantastic images of the recent Transit of Venus, as well as shots of some of the huge sunspots that have been crossing the sun.

4.0 Low cost, good results--great for DIY!

      Pros:

      Cons:

      Difficult to Use

      Comments:

This is not just a buy it and use it type of product--the film itself is rather delicate and not too useful by itself. However, compared to what a glass solar filter would cost, there's no contest. If you're up for a little do-it-yourself challenge, this is well worth it. I bought this just in time for the Venus transit and it worked quite well.

I can't attest to its optical quality as my scope was out of collimation and the seeing was terrible that day, however it seemed perfectly fine to me. I would highly recommend this, especially given the price of the smaller sheets (solar observing doesn't exactly require aperture anyway ;)

      4.0 Good product

      Pros:

      Easy to Use,Lightweight,Accurate

      Cons:

      Comments:

If economy is your aim, this is a good product. As I view the sun infrequently there was no need to buy an expensive filter. With a little heavy weight poster board and some glue and the Baader solar filter I fabricated my own solar filter for my 120mm refractor in short order. The filter provides clear images of sunspots in a natural white light. One does need to use proper precaution when handling so as not to damage the filter.

      Cons:

5.0 Quality film for making a solar filter

      Pros:

      Resolution

      Cons:

      Comments:

Could not find my solar filter a week before the recent solar eclipes. I was able to get the Baader Film shipped to me in time to make a solar filter for my 3.5 inch telescope and another for a camera lens (with some additional film left over).

I fould it relitvely easy to make the filters using cardbord and hot melt glue.

The quality of pictures I was able to make with the filter was excelent. In fact, I don't think I will ever buy a pre-made filter again, especially considering the price.

5.0 Baader AstroSolar Film and 72 mm UV fltr

      Pros:

      Easy to Use,Sharp Image,Agena's came packed well,Easy to cut,Agena sells many sizes,Lightweight,Compact

      Cons:

      Easy to smudge

      Comments:

I bought this for the transit of Venus. One of the members of our club had the idea of sandwiching the filter between two cheap UV filters for use with a Canon EOS camera. I bought a 500mm mirror/lens with a 2x doubler and attached this between two 72mm filters and got great pics of the sun. One of the thing I like about Agena is that they sold many different sizes of sheets so I could choose to get just what I needed and not have much waste.

      Pros:

      Quality,Affordable

      Cons:

      Fragile,ND5 can be a little dark,DIY

      Comments:

Agena had this film when everyone else had sold out just a few weeks before the Annular eclipse of 5/20/12 and Venus transit of 6/5/12. From one 8" square which was sized a little generously, I was able to make a 3.25", two 2.75", one 60mm and a pair of 30mm circular filters using the instructions included, for all of my scopes and binoculars. The views provided were much better than anything I'd seen through Mylar and gave me very good photos with my DSLR and Celestron 8. There were no pinholes or streaks in the material I received, but the surface is delicate. For long focal lengths, it may be a little dark for fast shutter speeds. On the whole I am very happy to have gotten this when I did and looking forward to more solar observing.

      5.0 An excellent alternative

      Pros:

      Strong Construction,Inexpensive,Lightweight,Easy to Use,Quality material

      Cons:

      Comments:

Baader AstroSolar film is an excellent alternative to purchasing a pre-built solar filter. The material is exceptional in quality and provides great natural color views of the Sun. Expect to see sunspots, surface granules and solar faculae. Using AstroSolar will allow you to observe solar eclipses and transits directly. It is often used in ready made film filters that cost more. If your willing to invest a little time in constructing your own filter cell, you can own a quality and safe solar filter for much less the cost.

4.0 High quality solar filter material

      Pros:

      Great views of sunspots,Inexpensive

      Cons:

      You build filter cell

      Comments:

If you are a careful person, Baader AstroSolar film can be used to construct a fine performing solar filter very inexpensively. Baader offers suggestions on building a filter cell. Care, however, must be taken to ensure that any filter cell you construct attaches securely to your telescope and cannot fall off or be blown off your telescope. Looking through a telescope without a proper solar filter for even an instant can permanently damage your eyes. The need to construct this cell is the only reason I did not rate the AstroSolar film 5 stars.

      4.0 Inexpensive solar filter

      Pros:

Great for visual,Great for photo use

      Cons:

A bit hard to get flat

      Comments:

I bought a 5" square to make a filter for a 4.5" Newtonian reflector. To make the filter I used the online instructions rather than the ones that came with the film. This left some ripples in the resulting filter, but it still seems to work well. Even though I bought the "visual" version, it works fine for webcam photography.

4.0 Get ready for the up coming Solar events

      Pros:

      Lightweight,Easy to Use

      Cons:

      Comments:

I'm not that interested in Solar astronomy so couldn't justify the cost of a full aperture filter. We're getting a Solar eclipse in May that will be near total in my area. In June we'll get to see the Venus transit an event that won't occur again until 2117!! I'd heard about this film on a forum that I participate. The Baader film comes with instructions on how to make a filter and I used this set up on my binoculars. For my scope I secured the film with a hose clamp and duct tape to an extra dew shield. I have to admit that since I've made these filters I do spend some time checking out the Sun.

      5.0 Great inexpensive product

      Pros:

      Easy to Use,Accurate

      Cons:

      Comments:

I got this film for a 6" reflector and a 9x50 RACI finder. Making the filter was easy and fun. The views these filters provide are excellent. It is no H-alpha scope but it provides great views of sun spots and some decent granulation on the surface when seeing conditions are good. From the research I did, the Baader Solar Film is better than all but the most high end glass filters or wedges. Anyone can make their own filter to get great views of the Sun, thus allowing one to do Astronomy during the day!. Highly recommended.

      Pros:

      Strong Construction,Lightweight,Compact,Quality Lenses

      Cons:

      Comments:

Purchased the 3 inch square to mate with my Celestron 127 powerseeker. Read on previous thread how easy it to make your own so I did. The views are great and I am NOT blind so well done Baader. Looking now to complete my solar filter collection for the upcoming Venus transit and make my own binocular filter.

      Pros:

      Accurate,Easy to Use

      Cons:

      Comments:

I purchased a piece of film and made my own solar filter using tape and a cardboard box for my 90mm Mak-Cass. The results were outstanding, not to mention making your own saves you about $50! Cons:

      Comments:

I purchased this Baader Solar film for a DIY filter for my refractor & it works great & is very safe to use. The views tru this film show crisp hi def white light views of the Sun. I saved quite a bit going this rout and ended up with the same results as if I would have bought a manufactured Filter. The included filter making instructions were well thought out & copied & make for an extremely safe filter to use.

5.0 Solar Observing for Less Than $30

      Pros:

      Great Contrast,Natural Color

      Cons:

      Comments:

Like most casual astronomers, I like to observe the sun when there is sun spot activity but I don't want to spend $75+ on a filter that I'm only going to use once in a while. With Baader Solar Film you can make your own Solar filter for $30 or less and get great/safe views of the Sun! You buy the size sheet of film for your scope (so there is little waste) and make a custom cardboard cell for you scope - in 30 minutes you can be observing the Sun!

      5.0 "Classic" solar filter film

      Pros:

      Easy to use,Neutral color,Tough material

      Cons:

      None

      Comments:

This is the classic, color-neutral solar filter film. I used it to make my own solar filter for a small reflector. It's easy to work with -- the filter material is pretty forgiving.

The film comes with suggestions for building your own filter, but you can find better "designs" (easier to build, easier to fit) on the web.

      5.0 Baader AstroSolar Film

      Pros:

      Inexpensive,Strong Construction,Sharp solar images

      Cons:

      Comments:

Ready-made solar filters are expensive, and even so, do not always provide detailed images of the sun. Baader AstroSolar film comes in sizes for just about anyone's scope, and allows people on a budget to make filters that give amazingly sharp views. As long as one is careful in the construction of the their own mounting, AstroSolar film is an ideal solution.

      4.0 Good DIY film

      Pros:

      Does what it says,Compact,Cheap

      Cons:

      Unstable,Difficult to Use,Thin film

      Comments:

I made my own solar filter with this film and its only flaw is the fact its so thin you must be very careful. I made the error of making my homemade solar filter too tight and it ended up making a suction effect when I placed it on my refractor.

This suction effect ended up making tiny weakenings, pinholes, but this is a good filter as long as you double check it every time before you use it.

      Pros:

      Strong Construction,High quality,Low cost,Easy to use

      Cons:

      None

      Comments:

I bought 2 of the largest foil for my astronomy club. 24 people here use the foil and there are still some areas left. We calculated the price for each person and there are even people who had to pay only $ 5 for a full aperture filter for their 6 inch reflectors. The quality could not be better, sunspots are clearly visible and well-detailed. The only con is the fact that you had to build your own cell, but I built mine (for 12 inch reflector) in 1 hour, using only tape and cardboards and it is very solid.

5.0 Great product and it's easy to make a filter holder

      Pros:

      Extremely reasonable price, Great images

      Cons:

      You have make a mount

      Comments:

I had purchased an Orion glass solar filter for my Celestron 80ED refractor. The images were really not too detailed and in doing research online, I read that the Baader film produced the highest resolution images.

I ordered a small piece from Agena Astro for a great price and, as usual, had it in a few days. A quick trip to the local hardware store with my dew shield yielded a PVC 4" flange that fit my dew shield perfectly once I shimmed it with velcro. The images are far superior to the glass filter which I ended up selling.

      Pros:

      Easy to work with

      Cons:

      Comments:

I purchased the Baader AstroSolar Film to make solar filters for the telescopes at my school. I teach a high school astronomy class and my students were able to observe and track sunspots using a solar filter made from the film (instructions included with the film).

Sunspot observation allows students to practice using the telescope during the day, when they can see what they are doing.

      Pros:

      Accurate,Strong Construction

      Cons:

      Difficult to Use

      Comments:

I used this ND5 filter film to view the solar eclipse last july 2009. It worked great. Cut it out to fit the adapter ring for my Nikon cam system.

The film is so strong, that even when you try to stretch it, it doesn't tear apart.

What I found difficult is that, it's a bit thin, which makes it hard to work on. And has to be stretched so that wrinkles won't form, and won't cause any wobbly image.

      4.0 A unique product

      Pros:

      Accurate

      Cons:

      Difficult to Use

      Comments:

Baader AstroSolar Film is a unique multi-layered foil product that enables safe observation of solar eclipses and other events. I purchased from Agena AstroProducts because they cut the sheets down in to more manageable and affordable pieces for sale. [...].The one big draw back is that the foil is reflective (duh!) and not at all useful in photographic applications... I had hoped to use it for ultra long exposures during the daytime, but internal reflections between the foil and lens made the resulting image unusable.

      4.0 Astrosolar film

      Pros:

      Compact

      Cons:

      Comments:

I bought plastic Electrical pipe caps and cut out the size I needed, then used shims to attach the film to the inside of the caps. The caps come in dec. or metric, so you can get a tight fit on most scope diameters.

5.0 Reliable, yet cheap solution for SOLAR

      Pros:

      Accurate,Compact

      Cons:

      Comments:

I bought this from AgenaAstro. Since it's basically film you have to be careful about handling it, to prevent any pinholes. Mine came with out any pinholes. I installed it on the bottom of the cardboard box with precut hole. I designed it in such a way that entire box slides over my objective. I pasted dark paper on side of the box such that it acts as a flap over the filter.
Now the quality. Its really good and affordable filter option for solar viewing. It shows white colored sun with clear views of sunspots. Don't expect views of prom with this.
I would recommend this filter to anyone who is interested in solar views and sunspots. For proms, that is totally different ball game and requires different optical arrangement.

5.0 Very Cost Effective Way to View the Sun

      Pros:

      Great images,Inexpensive

      Cons:

      Film is somewhat fragile

      Comments:

I bought the Baader Astro film and constructed my own 4" solar filter as described in the instructions included with the product. This was a very cost effective alternative to buying a pre-made unit; especially a glass one but it provides beautiful images of the sun, especially when combined with a yellow or orange planetary filter. Not much sun spot activity lately but just the other day I had some killer views of faculae on the solar limb - something I have never seen visually before. The only detractor is the fragility of the film - make sure you have a storage container that will adequately protect your filter. Overall, very highly recommended.

5.0 Wonderful and EASY to use!!!

      Pros:

      Durable,Low cost,Easy to use

      Cons:

      Not for solar prominences

      Comments:

This is a big breakthrough in white light solar viewing from Baader Planetarium....instead of paying $50-$100 or more for a glass filter, you can buy this film for only about $35 and it comes in a roughly 8 x 11 inch sheet that you then cut to whatever size and shape you want. Just design your own cheap filter cell to place on your telescope. The kit even comes with instructions on how to do this! I actually used a grille from a car speaker and some foam for mine, and it fits snugly over the dew shield of my scope and won't fall off. AND, I still have plenty more material left over just in case I want to make more filters for another scope or if the film gets damaged. I have been using mine for over 2 years and it has not been damaged at all.

ALWAYS USE CAUTION WHEN SOLAR VIEWING. This filter does a wonderful job protecting you, but just remember to design your filter cell so that it is not easily knocked off the scope by a person or by a breeze. As long as you keep this in mind, you will be very pleased with the views!

WHAT YOU SEE AND WHAT YOU CAN'T SEE: With white light solar viewing, you see sunspots and even some detail on the sun, but that is about it. No solar prominences. You can buy a small 1-1/4 inch glass filter called the "solar continuum filter" that screws onto your eyepiece or binoviewer nosepiece which can help you see the grainy surface detail and sunspots more clearly (it should be used with an objective filter like the AstroSolar film). This glass filter is also made by Baader Planetarium. I don't have this yet, but I will probably get it soon.

In order to see solar prominences, you have to buy a highly specialized filter system and these can be roughly $1500 to $2000 or more...OR buy the PST Personal Solar Telescope from Coronado for about $500. This is a small scope that lets you see those big solar prominences. This is just something to keep in mind.

In short, for white light solar viewing at a small and very reasonable cost, the AstroSolar film from Baader Planetarium simply cannot be beat!! This is one of the best deals in astronomy in my opinion, because you get a great product that can be customized to suit your needs (small refractor, binoculars, big SCT) and you still have some solar film left over for other scopes or just in case the film gets damaged.

This simple product gets the highest recommendation I have ever given in any of my reviews! VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!!

      5.0 Go Solar

      Pros:

      Inexpensive, Pleasant view

      Cons:

      None

      Comments:

With the solar cycle promising to peak soon, I wanted to be prepared for some "white light" viewing of our closest star. I started checking the prices on glass filters for my two refractors, a 80mm and a 110mm. Though reasonably priced, if I wanted to have one for each scope, the cost was more than I wanted to put out.

In the search process, I came across the Baader AstroSolar film at Agena AstroProducts. This was an excellent opportunity to equip each scope with it's own filter without "breaking the bank". The film needed to equip both scopes (with some left over) was far less than the cost of one glass filter. Because the film comes in various square sheets, I ordered enough to make filters for both scopes. While waiting for the sheet of material to show up, I downloaded the instructions, from Agena's site for making your own cell. Instructions are also included WITH the product and a full Baader AstroSolar film sheet (approximately 20"x40") is available...for those with the need for more than a few filters.

I used cardboard, built up in layers, to form the cells. This proved to be very adequate and sturdy...enough that a wind wouldn't be sending my filter into the next county. A snug fit is very important...especially if there are other observers involved.

The filter material gives a very comfortable, natural view of the sun. Sunspots (when present) are very detailed and I've even used the "visual" film for photographing the Sun's disk with good results.

If you're thinking about getting into white light solar viewing, during this upcoming peak in sunspot activity, the Baader AstroSolar film is a very inexpensive and effective accessory.

4.0 Baader Planetarium AstroSolar Safety Film

      Pros:

      Lightweight and easy to cut; Very good performance;
      Great Contrast and clarity.

      Cons:

      Very thin, handle with care.

      Comments:

The Transit of Mercury in 2006 was literally a washout for me. I was set up and ready to go, but the weather was a solid wall of overcast clouds. Oh well, that's the way it goes sometimes in the world of astronomy. However, all was not lost. The following day, which turned out to be bright and sunny, I was rewarded with a great view of the sun and low and behold...sunspots! This solar observation was accomplished with the help of Baader Planetarium AstoSolar Safety Film, cut and stretched across and fitted to an 83mm solar film cell holder, placed over the dew shield of my Orion 80mm f/5 refractor.

I must say that I was impressed by the performance of the Baader Solar Film. It rendered views of the sun in a neutral white tone, with very nice contrast and clarity. Views of the sunspots were sharp, and even showed some details around the spots themselves. I've yet to use any glass solar filters, but the Baader AstroSolar Safety Film is an economical alternative.

5.0 Making your own Baader Solar Filter for a Subtantial Savings

      Pros:

Great image. 3D effect with natural white color, sky background is black. Inexpensive.

      Cons:

Very slight contrast deficiency. Possibly due to bad objective.

      Comments:

As I prepared for the May 2006 Transit of Mercury, I needed a safe, inexpensive, and high performance means to view the event. After reading a wealth of reviews about the latest products used to observe the Sun, I decided to go with the Baader AstroSolar Safety Film - a thin optically transparent aluminum coated substrate.

I purchased a 6" x 6" sheet of the film from a reputable dealer at a great price and was able to construct three front-end tube attachable units for my telescopes. The filter units I made were for my 4.5" f/8 Newtonian reflector, 90mm f/11 Konus refractor, and my 2.4" f/15 Jason refractor. I even had enough of the stuff reserved over to make another one if needed! If I would have purchased the filters with pre-fabricated cells, they would have cost me a small fortune. Using only a 3" x3" square section of the filter allowed me to make a well constructed cardboard front-end attachable filter with a clear aperture of around 2.5" inches for my 4.5" reflector. Just remember to do as the instructions say in keeping the film loose with no stress or stretching during construction. Actually, it is recommended that when you attach the film to your cell, that it should have a loose wavy (but not wrinkled) relaxed appearance to it. This will not at all affect performance. It is recommended by Baader.

      SPECIAL NOTE:

Baader AstroSolar Safety Film is very thin, yet durable. Before cutting out a section for your project, place the film between two sheets of typing paper being careful not to folder, crimp, or letting the film slide freely between the sheets. This process has many beneficial results. One, it will prevent you from having to handle the film with your bare hands causing image quality robbing finger prints, and secondly, it will make for more accurate and easier cutting of the material. The stuff is so thin that cutting it without adequate protection will most likely ruin it. So cut it between a paper substrate.

      PERFORMANCE:

Using my 90mm refractor, I attached the filter to the dew cap and took aim at the Sun, and the Mercury transit was already in progress. I was happy to see that the Sun took on a natural white color compared to other filters that cast the image in yellow, or orange. The sky showed up as black. Instituting a power of 25x using my 40mm Televue Plossl, revealed some very fine detail on my 90mm f/11. I could easily make out granulation over the entire Sun's surface, patches of faculae along the limb, and the one sunspot visible near the limb looked great. And when I switched to a higher power, I could make out fine detail in the penumbra of the sunspot with relative ease. As for Mercury, it appeared as a distinct disk against the Sun's surface. What really struck me was how well the Sun's spherical shape was conveyed. The overall effect of the filter enhanced the image in making the Sun look more three dimensional, rather than as a flat disk with curved-over edges. The only small drawback I noticed with this filter was how it ever so slightly muted the contrast of the sunspot and the tiny disk of Mercury against the Sun's face. But, then again, I discovered later that my objective was mildly under-corrected, which could have been a contributing factor. Nevertheless, the view was breathtaking. I highly recommend Baader AstroSolar Safety Film for safe and enjoyable observing of our nearest star.
