4.0 Good quality filter

Good quality filter. Helps make planets sharper and a bit easier to focus on. Makes everything look slightly yellow, which isn't a problem for me. I often use a #8 light yellow color filter anyway. But I have to live with lots of light pollution in my area. The Baader Semi-APO or Contrast-Booster filters would help with light pollution more, but cost more too. I thought about exchanging the Fringe Killer filter for one of those, but decided to keep it. Now I keep the Fringe Killer permanently attached to the diagonal in my refractor scope. It helps protect the mirror too.

4.0 Good Quality Filter

Used this filter several times when viewing planets and the mood via my 90mm Refractor. It does noticeably cut down on the purple fringing, though it does not eliminate it completely (thus 4 stars). Definitely worth having when viewing Jupiter and the Moon, particularly if you are taking photographs.

Pretty much eliminates the violet "halo" around bright objects (Moon, Jupiter, bright stars). It does add a "warm", orange cast to these objects however......very slight, and an acceptable tradeoff for the removal of the CA in my opinion. I've tried every minus-violet filter out there...this one is THE BEST. Considerably better than the Orion V-block, or the laughable suggestion of a yellow filter!

This filter is designed to reduce the effects of chromatic aberations in refracting telescopes. It passes the center of the visible spectrum of light and cuts off the ultraviolet and infrared wavelengths. In use it can be very helpful in reducing rainbow effects on bright objeces such as planets. It works best with a dark sky. During twilight hours, the filtering effect produces a disturbing yellow cast to an othewise blue sky. This filter is an effective and inexpensive tool for improving the visual performance of low and moderatly priced refracting telescopes.

Difficult to Use

Use with istar 6 inch f-12 lens really improves planetary images at higher powers ie over 300 for Saturn. Only down side very finicky changing at night between eyepieces so I leave in diagional highly recommended.

5.0 Big improvement for inexpensive optics

Removes violet halos,Natural Color

I have an 80 mm f/5 non-apochromatic refractor I use as a guide scope and for wide-field imaging. It produces violet halos around bright stars, which I had been removing using Photoshop desaturation techniques. I had heard about "minus violet" filters and having had good luck with Baader filters in the past, decided to try this one. I now leave the filter on the camera attached to the 80 mm scope all the time. It makes focusing sharper, and the violet halos are gone. I don't notice any other effects on the color (but admittedly I'm doing deep sky photography where all the colors are somewhat fake anyway). The scope is still not apochromatic, but it is a lot closer now and I am very happy with this filter.

I had my first night out with this filter and what a difference! I have a 4 inch F/6 refractor and without this filter I had trouble seeing any detail on Jupiter, other than the 2 main belts. With the filter most of the glare is gone and I could see 4 belts in average seeing at only 67X. The moons of Jupiter also seem to come to a sharper focus and the same is true for stars. This filter will permanently stay in my diagonal. Get this is you have a fast refractor.

5.0 Great Filter For Refractors and SCT's

Gives that little "extra" to both my 4.3" ED APO as well as my C9.25 SCT. It does add a little yellow to the image when using the Canon 500D, but creating a preset in Lightroom, or Action in Photoshop will take care of that issue. Mars and Jupiter looked better with the filter than without it on both scopes. Mars's Polar cap is more visible, as are the cloud bands and GRS on Jupiter. I used it for a Comet Garradd time lapse sequence, and for M82, and NGC 7331. Focusing was quite a bit easier, especially using the 500D's "live view" mode. I have not done extensive tests using expensive equipment, but ony the "what my eyes see" test, because that's the bottom line, and I do see an improvement both visually, and photographically. This is a great addition to my "toolbox", and money well spent. I'll be sticking with the Baader line, strictly top notch.

5.0 Turns an achro into a Semi-APO

I've had a theory about achromatic refractors - that being that it is harder to get a sharp tight pinpoint star focus at higher magnifications due to the chromatic abberation inherent in achromatic designs. So I bought the fringe killer because it has high transmission overall and only cuts significantly in the blue. The color shift with this filter is marginal and only noticed on the Moon. But it works wonders with my 140mm Vixen Neo-achro. I've gone back and forth between views with and without the fringe killer filter and I can say that: (1) there does not seem to be any significant loss of light. This I noted by looking at faint granular open clusters. The number of detectable stars did not decrease with the filter. (2) The filter does make the views noticeably sharper and steadier. In going back and forth I can see tighter pinpoint stars with the fringe killer filter than without. I also notice the stars seem steadier and the overall field seems a little cleaner with a touch more contrast. All in all this turns my 140mm Neo-achro into an almost apochromat - quite amazing.

Its not a Semi APO filter

I bought the Baader Planetarium fringe killer without any prior knowledge about it. It was the greatest upgrade I have made for my telescopes, two meade etx60's, a meade etx80, and a coronado pst. After reading the very informative lable on the filter box, which conveniently supplies full spectral data and absorption lines, I opened the jewel case, which is aptly named because I was dazzled in awe by the spectacular coating the filter presented. It visually resembles a prescious gem at certain angles. The filter screws onto any standard eyepiece which then drops into your telescopes eyepiece receptical as normal standard filters should. The first thing you will clearly notice in your viewing is more stars, and a gaseous debris surrounding star clusters. I honesty saw this for the first time, specifically because of the fringe killer filter. It lowers light pollution glow just enough to make you say WOW. This I will remember for the rest of my life, like the first shooting star I ever saw. I will definatley be buying a second fringe killer from Agena Astroproduct's, and definitely will try the Baader Semi-Apo filter in early 2011.

While I primarily bought it to observe deep-sky objects, for which it provides excellent views, I occasionally enjoy using it to split double stars or observe a planet or two. This is where the scope suffers from some serious chromatic aberration. The violet fringe on brighter objects is enough to detract from the enjoyment of the scope. All bright objects from stars to planets to license plates are surrounded by a violet halo and an inability to come to a truly sharp focus.

Baader Planetarium's Fringe Killer filter is just one of many “minus violet” filters available that are designed to cancel out light from the violet end of the spectrum, effectively reducing the violet haze around bright objects. It comes in two sizes to screw onto eyepieces or diagonals of either 1.25 or 2-inches in diameter.

The Fringe Killer is very effective at reducing the chromatic aberration to the point of making even my refractor much more enjoyable for viewing planets or bright stars. It even helps to reduce visual "noise" muddling of the image also caused by CA, making the image actually appear sharper.

However, some of these filters can actually make the problem worse by reducing the amount of light transmitted and further causing resolution problems.The Baader Fringe-Killer filter is great for helping minimize this problem in fast achromatic telescopes. The filter is precision ground and fully coated. It uses 50 dielectric coatings on all surfaces of the glass. When used with my Orion 100mm f/6 refractor, views of moonscapes appear much sharper in detail and purple halos are reduced around stars and other bright objects. The filter does add a somewhat yellow tinge to the view, but you should acclimate to this very quickly. I paid around [$] for the 2" version several years ago, and have not regretted the purchase.
