Manufacturer Description

The Baader Planetarium Moon & Skyglow (Neodymium) filter brings an entirely unique approach to planetary contrast enhancement and light pollution reduction. Based on earlier research at Carl Zeiss, Baader has developed a new filter that uses Neodymium glass which filters out a few specific wavelengths from streetlights as well as skyglow from the Moon. The unique spectral characteristics of Neodymium also boost color contrasts by isolating the Red, Green, and Blue regions (so-called RGB enhancement). The result is a filter that leaves natural colors mostly intact, but significantly enhanced.

Planetary and Lunar views are improved in all scopes, reflectors, refractors (APO or Achro). Jupiter's Great Red Spot and ruddy hues of the bands are noticeably enhanced, and contrast of Martian surface features significantly boosted. The Background sky is darkened, and subtle details improved. The filter's high efficiency preserves image brightness, and many Galaxies, Nebulae and Globular Star Clusters are improved due to the reduction of skyglow from artificial lighting.

But that is not all. Baader has enhanced this filter by integrating its proprietary 7-layer Phantom Group and IR blocking coatings as well. The result is improved supression of chromatic aberrations for astrophotography applications.

The filter substrate is a special custom melt of Neodymium doped glass, designed for specific transmission characteristics, and made only for Baader Planetarium. In addition to its unique spectral characteristics, unlike most filters, the Baader Moon & Skyglow surfaces are optically polished to deliver the best possible image sharpness and contrast. The high quality of Baader Planetarium filters permits stacking with no image degradation.

The second image above demonstrate the large contrast improvement on Mars.  The image on the left was taken without filtration, while the image on the right was taken through a Moon & Skyglow. The Moon & Skyglow image shows significantly higher contrast and surface features barely visible without the filter. Both images were acquired identically, without any contrast enhancement, and give a very good idea of the planetary contrast improvement that is seen visually.

2.0 "I Can See Clearer Now The City Lights Are Gone...."

      Pros:

      Cons:

      Comments:

but look, if you live in Manhattan (or New Orleans, like I do) and you think that by buying into this piece of glass that suddenly the entire Milky Way somehow materialize inside of your scope or that stunning vistas of the Horsehead Nebula will come galloping into view all as if you were standing atop Mt. Palomar, than you will be sorely disappointed. I've not had a chance to use this on any of my telescopes outside of the unfortunate umbrella dome of a glowing metropolis so I cannot speak to the alleged enhancement of Deep Sky objects but as for the sublimation of artificial lighting, I give it a solid "MEH". It does a very good job of imbuing contrast on our planetary neighbors but any adequate set of cheap colored filters serve just as well.

      5.0 Amazing on Jupiter's GRS

      Pros:

      Cons:

      Comments:

I bought this filter a year ago, and just now used it. That was a mistake. Last night at 200x, this filter in combination with an 82A, brought the GRS in Jupiter out very nicely. Now I can't wait to use it on Cassini's Division. This was definitely worth the money on planets.

5.0 Baader Planetarium 2" Moon and Skyglow FIlter

      Pros:

      Cons:

      Comments:

I had trouble with the threads on this filter from another supplier. I have seen other complaints about this being a problem. However, the one I received from Agena Astro had no problem and fits all my 2 inch eyepieces and Barlow.

      5.0 Great Planetary filter!

      Pros:

      Cons:

      Comments:

bought this in preparation for the Mars flyby in July but used it on Jupiter the other night. dramatically increased detail in the bands and contrast across the entire planet. adds only a slight amount of blue tint but it's barely noticeable. can't wait to try this on some nebula! great filter!

      5.0 Does what it says

      Pros:

      Cons:

      Comments:

Haven't had a chance to use it on planets yet. But it does very slightly improve the detail on large galaxies in my 14" Newtonian, at my class 3 site with exit pupils greater than 3mm. It also increases the moons contrast and brings out more detail in the Orion Nebula at all magnifications... It's kind of cool to look through the filter in daylight, things like wood grain and flowers leap out in contrast. Can't wait to try it on Mars this summer!

      5.0 Good Filter

      Pros:

      Cons:

      Comments:

This filter helps cut light pollution and improves contrast. I have enjoyed it on the moon and planets, and in trying to reduce light pollution from a major urban center. (I have better luck picking out stars from a bright hazy background.) It reduces but does not eliminate fringing, and seems to change it from violet to yellow. Nothing can bring back the dark night sky except common sense and better urban planning, and good luck with both of those. In the meantime, I recommend a filter like this one.

      Pros:

      Cons:

      Comments:

I tested it in my main observing site, a gray light pollution area. It improves contrast, but it will not make your photos really better. In the suburbs the improvement is better!

5.0 Excellent on Mars & Jupiter, and achro solar/lunar

      Pros:

      Reliable Threads

      Cons:

      Comments:

I have found this greatly increases contrast for viewing Maria on Mars, and sharpens Jupiter nicely, though I might prefer light blue. Some minor enhancement on nebulae is nice for small scopes. GREAT in achros on Sun and Moon when combined with a yellow CA cutting filter (I use either No. 8 or No. 15). Best white solar I have achieved by far is No. 15 + MSG in my C102.

4.0 No free lunch in a white zone

      Pros:

      Easy to Use,Compact

      Cons:

      Comments:

I do primarily imaging, rather than visual astronomy and got this to help tame some of the light pollution in my neck of the woods (which is a white zone). It helps, but as far as imaging goes it does leave objects with a bit of a reddish hue that I've not figured out how to adjust in post, as you lose a segment of the blue and green (because those are bands not passed by the filter, because they are "skyglow" (Oxygen) and other emission lines common to artificial lighting).

For emission/planetary nebulae, this works fine.

I am moving into monochrome CCD imaging, and am thinking about using this filter for luminance.

5.0 Excellent for heavy light pollution

      Pros:

      Quality Lenses,Lightweight,Accurate,Easy to Use

      Cons:

      Comments:

Baader comes through again, as they always do.

I image from a red zone, bordering on white, just outside of Nashville, TN. With Nashville on the NW horizon, and another smaller but still bright town to the SE, I'm surrounded by light blooms and yellow-red skies.

This filter does a superb job of limiting the glow from nearby cities, as well as closer localized LP such as street lamps and porch lights.

Processing is considerably easier, shutter can remain open longer to catch more detail, and fainter nebulosity and stars can be teased out of the data.

An excellent product at any price.

3.0 Still undecided about its usefulness.

      Pros:

      Easy to Use,Lightweight,Quality Lenses,Strong Construction

      Cons:

      Comments:

Not really sure how much this improves the photons coming through the eyepiece. It does seem to do a little, but knowing you're using it sometimes give you an idea that its working, but for me, I wonder if the money spent is worth the minimal increase in viewing performance. I would recommend it, but try to use one before buying one.

      Pros:

      Strong Construction,Quality Lenses,Easy to Use,Accurate

      Cons:

      Comments:

      5.0 Must have filter

      Pros:

      Strong Construction,Accurate,Quality Lenses,Compact

      Cons:

      Comments:

I live in a suburban neighborhood with moderate to severe light pollution. I'm generally restricted to lunar, planetary, or bright clusters for observing. Nebulae, galaxies, and faint comets are generally drowned out by streetlights and my neighbor's porch lights.

Using this filter I can easily pick out detail and structure in the Andromeda Galaxy and the Orion Nebula. Fainter nebulae suddenly stand out from the background.

The only downside I can come up with is that it does tend to give objects a slightly greenish tint. Given the choice of a greenish tint or not being able to see these objects at all, it's hardly a drawback at all.

The Baader M&S filter is excellent for cutting glare and bringing out surface features on Mars, without drastically changing the color of the planet. I do not use color filters, but I purchased this based on forum recommendations. I have not liked filters that change the overall color of a planet, so I strictly used only ND filters, until now. I suspect it will work equally as well on Jupiter.

      4.0 Noticable improvement

      Pros:

      Strong Construction,Quality Lenses

      Cons:

      Comments:

I was dubious about this filter's hype, but it does what it says it will. With the filter, on a night with a 3rd quarter moon, the back ground was noticably darker with the filter and the 'faint fuzzies' were just a bit easier to make out. Over all, I'd rate the improvement to be about 10-20%. It doesn't work miracles, but it definitely works.

      4.0 Great for Mars

      Pros:

      Compact,Accurate,Strong Construction,Quality Lenses

      Cons:

      Comments:

I'm not sure why they call this a "Moon and Skyglow" filter because it doesn't seem to help me very much with either of those things, but it's a nice contrast booster for planetary observation. I've been especially pleased with it for Mars observation. The with and without pictures of Mars that they publish are realistic.

3.0 Not quite as good as expeceted

      Pros:

      Quality Lenses

      Cons:

      Comments:

I bought this after reading the reviews that this filter enhanced views of Jupiter. To be truth full I did not notice much of a difference in the view with or with out the filter. I did try it on the Orion nebula and noticed a slight improvement even thought this not a nebular filter.

3.0 Good quality but limited application

      Pros:

      Strong Construction,Quality Lenses

      Cons:

      Not for light pollution

      Comments:

As with other Baader Planetarium products, this filter is of very high quality. I purchased it to use as a light pollution filter on a small aperture refractor, but it does very little to cut out light pollution. It does however "boost" the apparent contrast in views of the moon and planets, with very little colour change...kind of like those blue-blocker sunglasses! It boosts contrast in terrestrial use too.

      4.0 Baader Neo Skyglow Filter

      Pros:

      Compact,Quality Construction

      Cons:

      Comments:

The Baader Neo Moon & Skyglow Filter does what it is designed for in that it increases the contrast between the background sky and most deep sky objects such as nebulae when observing from light polluted suburban locations.
The filter does not perform miracles but it offers, what seems to me, an 10% increase in the visibility of faint objects from these locations, therefore making observing with a telescope just that little more enjoyable.

      5.0 Outstanding for planet viewing!

      Pros:

Enhanced contrast on planets. Far and away better than regular color filters.

      Cons:

Might disappoint those buying it specifically for suppressing skyglow, or moonlight.

      Comments:

The name of this filter "Moon & Skyglow" may cause folks to pass over this filter's biggest strength, which is a planet filter. In my refractor and reflector, surface features on Mars, Jupiter and Saturn were more vivid and contrasty, without any significant color shift.

In fact what color shift that does occur is an improvement as the colors seem brighter and "purer" (not actually so, but you have to use it to appreciate it). Those who have used traditional color filters when viewing the planets and were understandably nonplussed will be surprised at the results of this one. The opacity is mild -- comparable to an 80A filter, yet whites seem whiter than without the filter.

If you only had to own ONE planet filter, this should be the one.

As for the filter's title uses: On the Moon, there is a pleasing slight color shift (whiter disk). Space above the Moon appears darker than without the filter.

As a skyglow filter, it is very mild. It won't significantly dim the views, and the sky IS noticeably darker for viewing DSOs (I'm in a white zone for light pollution). This can be useful for some short exposure astrophotography, but is still not as aggressive as normal broadband filter.

Minuses? Well, it probably won't work for Venus.

4.0 Great for my light polluted area

      Pros:

      Compact,Strong Construction,Accurate

      Cons:

      Comments:

I live in Bangkok, a capital city of Thailand, where my observatory is surrounded by three Condominiums. Before using this filter, I was able to take at most two minutes exposure (Canon DSLR) before the image washed out. Neodymium filter allows me to take three to five minutes long before having sky fog in my image.

When seeing the color histogram in Photoshop, I notice that the filter is great at red and blue wavelength whilst the green channel is cut off by almost half. However, the color balance can be dealt with post processing easily.

Overall, I'm very happy with the product. It allows me to collect more details in deep sky objects, by longer exposure, with a very reasonable price.

      4.0 Moon & Skyglow Filter 1.25"

      Pros:

      Improves contrast

      Cons:

      Comments:

This is a great filter for bright objects like the Moon and Venus. It dims the brightness and improves the contrast, yet it doesn't degrade the image like some cheap Moon filters do. It is a high quality piece and the price is comparable to other Moon filters. The dimming effect is probably not sufficient for a scope larger than about 8" for the Moon and Venus, but it's great for smaller scopes.
