Burgess Optical 20x80 Lightweight binoculars
Pros:Lightweight, inexpensive, decent views, good Burgess customer service.
Cons:Opinions vary on views but are decent. Narrow FOV, some false color.
Comments:On the night of 7/26-27/08 I had a chance to look through and spend some time with my friend's Burgess 20x80 Lightweight binoculars. And they are light! The weight comes in at only 3-1/2 pounds. But the price is what really hits you in the wallet. New, it costs only $149 plus shipping. That is three times cheaper than Orion's Megaview 20x80s. This is just an excellent value for someone wanting to increase the size of their binos.
Bottom Line: Would you recommend this item? Yes
These are multi-coated and feature BAK4 porro prisms, a field of view of 3.5 degrees and eye relief of 13mm. The stars are sharp out to about 75% of the field and then sharpness falls off in the balance. But the center is very good. However, another friend who was viewing with us was of the opinion that the center stars were still not sharp as they should be, although they were acceptable.
There is some false color on lunar views but it is not anything to take away from deep sky viewing while star hopping. The focusing is also very smooth. Another value of these are that you don't need a expensive mount and head to set these up as the weight is so light. All in all, it is an exceptional value offering very decent views.Sort by
