Burgess 102 Achro Refractor
Pros:If you find one for a reasonable price, buy it for a low power scope.
Cons:Don't expect ED results from this achro doublet.
Comments:I owned one of these "built like a tank" Burgess 102 Achro's and enjoyed low power views of the Orion Nebula, 7 Sisters, various Globular Clusters, lunar and planetary views. I purchased it with case, diagonal, finder, rings and EP adapter at a sub-market price due to issues with the doublet which was masked down to 80mm aperture. (I removed the "mask ring" - just in front of the focuser - as soon as it arrived to provide 102 clear aperture).
Bottom Line: Would you recommend this item? Yes
Orion's Trapezium yielded 4 pinpoint stars at low power and I could make out a fifth at around 100x. My particular scope was better corrected than some of the others sold and could sustain 125x for lunar and planetary viewing with very little image breakdown. I incorporated a minus violet filter to supress color at higher magnifications. Lunar viewing was crisp and sharp using my Burgess SWA eyepieces and UO 2.8 barlow.
The fit and finish of this scope was first rate. The 2" focuser was smooth and held heavy eyepieces (Burgess 2" SWAs) very well. The case, rings and finder were well made and held up under many hours of viewing. This was one of Burgess' first offerings and if an ED doublet were available, I would have replaced the original doublet with the ED and kept this finely crafted scope.
Fit and finish: 9 out of 10.
Optics: 7 out of 10 (for low power enjoyment).
