In 1609, world-renowned Italian scientist, Galileo Galilei, introduced an elementary telescope to the growing astronomy community which sparked interest into the mysterious night sky for centuries to come. Four centuries later, Celestron offers the portable FirstScope Telescope. The FirstScope pays tribute to Galileo Galilei and many of history’s most notable astronomers and scientists by displaying their names around the optical tube. We honor the contributions of these men and women, who brought us one step closer to understanding the universe around us.

Cheap, but not cheerful
Pros:Sturdy base
Cons:Poor optics, having to deal with Celestron
Comments:I was looking for an easy to use telescope for my young daughters. Having read the review of the Firstscope in S&T, and having given up waiting for my Galileoscopes to arrive (after seven months I cancelled the order), it sounded perfect. Mechanically the scope is good: robust, steady and easy to use. But the optical quality is poor. The blurb from Celestron clearly states that the bands of Jupiter would be visible, and my daughter was extremely disappointed when all she could see was a fuzzy blob with strong colour fringing. She also knew that she should have been able to see four moons. I started to explain that perhaps one was being eclipsed by Jupiter, but then checked in my 8" to find that the problem was that the image of Jupiter was so distorted that one of the moons was lost in the glare.
Bottom Line: Would you recommend this item? No
I later checked that the collimation was as good as possible (only the secondary is adjustable), and confirmed that a sharp focus just could not be achieved. I'm no optics expert but I suspect the problem is the spherical primary mirror. I also tried some better quality eyepieces than those supplied with the Firstscope (Kellners). This removed the colour fringing, but I could still not achieve a good focus.
I contacted Celestron customer service to point out the problems, and in particular that we couldn't see the cloud bands of Jupiter. Their total response was "Yes it does" [show the bands]. Thanks Celestron for your valuable assistance.Sort by
