Celestron 30mm Ultima
Pros:Sharp to edge; 52 degree apparent field; easy eye placement
Cons:Absolutely none!
Comments:This is simply the best long-focal length 1.25" EP out there. The 35 Ultima has a wider true field, but eye placement is more critical and eye relief is a bit too much compared to the 30mm. This eyepiece is tack-sharp to the edge of its 52 degree apparent field down to F/6 (maybe even lower). No blackouts, effective coatings, nice apparent field. It simply doesn't get better. In binoviewers, this will quickly become one of your favorites (assuming your bino has at least 25mm clear aperture, otherwise it will vignette the view with this EP).
Bottom Line: Would you recommend this item? YesSep 15, 2007Celestron Ultima 30mm
Pros:Celestron's top of the line in 1.25" eyepieces, very bright FOV.
Cons:May be a bit pricey new, heavy at 1/2 pound.
Comments:I borrowed a Celestron Ultima 30mm for this review and it was an excellent experience. For a 1.25" eyepiece my experience was almost as if I was looking through a 2" eyepiece. This eyepiece gives excellent views and very sharp images over the total field of view in my 8" f/10 SCT. Very bright edges I've seen in quite some time. Some eyepieces will vignette near the field stop, but not this eyepiece. If you have two, this 30mm will binoviewer well, as it did in my Denkemeier bino.
Bottom Line: Would you recommend this item? Yes
Stats: Cost new $90, used around $70 with eye relief of 17mm or so. What's also nice is this eyepiece has 5 glass elements, not 4 like in the standard plossl and the views are that much crisper. Highly recommended.Mar 25, 2007The Ultimate 1.25" 30mm eyepiece the Celestron Ultima
Pros:Sharp, contrasty, comfortable eye relief
Cons:NONE
Comments:Yesterday I had the opportunity to use an eyepiece that I have not used since obtaining a number of premium 2" widefield eyepieces. This neglegted eyepiece was my 1.25" 30mm Celestron Ultima. I had the Meade etx80 out doing some birdwatching along with a friend and his TeleVue Ranger. I needed to use some 1.25" eyepieces so I brought out my case that has the ULTIMAS!! The views were awesome. This 50degee FOV eyepiece that has blackened lens edges and a comfortable 21mm of eyerelief, made the ETX scope shine as a birdwatcher telescope. The images were bright, contrasty and sharp to the edge. Leaving the scope out last night I had the chance to observe again with my long lost friend. Star fields were beautiful with low power sweeps , even the moon was tak sharp at this low power. Swinging over to my 6" Skywatcher refractor, the beautiful open clusters in Auriga really took my breath away using the 30mm Ultima. Pinpoint stars, nice resolution and contrast with a lot of black skies sprinkled with background stars. If you are looking for a sharp low power eyepiece, that is comfortable to use, generous FOV,with pinpoint stars, give an Ultima a chance. It works great at F5 and longer Focal lengths.I have now placed him back in my eyepiece case with my premium 2" eyepieces. Welcome back old friend!! Bob Midiri
