Celestron Ultima 8 SCT
Pros:Just an excellent telescope in all respects.
Cons:Very heavy for its size - around 70 lbs total.
Comments:Believe it or not, this was my first scope. After deciding to buy a telescope, I read everything I could, and decided that an 8" SCT was the best all-around scope for me. Having decided that, I chose the Ultima because:
Bottom Line: Would you recommend this item? Yes
1. Very robust design and mechanics
2. Enhanced coatings
3. Two excellent included eyepieces - 30mm Ultima and 12.5mm Ultima
4. 8x50 right angle or straight through finder scope
5. Heavy duty trunk style case included
The scope has not been a disappointment. The tripod, wedge, and fork arms are very solid, giving stable views. Optically the views are great as well. In addition the clock drive is very accurate - even roughly polar aligned, the scope will track an object very closely.
Although no longer produced, the scope is sometimes available used. If you are considering one of these, make sure it has PEC (periodic error correction) and make sure it uses a 9v transistor battery. Earlier models of this scope did not have these.Sort by
