Manufacturer Description

Color filters can be very useful for enhancing your views of the Moon and the planets. Depending on the atmospheric conditions, the telescope being used, the observer's experience, and the planet being observed or photographed, the advantages of color filters can be anywhere from subtle to dramatic. The right filter can make all the difference between seeing several small craters in the floor of Clavius on the Moon or not; seeing five or six swirls in Jupiter's belts or not; or seeing the inner Crepe Ring of Saturn or not.

GSO's 1.25" color/planetary filters are manufactured from the purest optical glass and are dyed-in-the-mass (not simply "color coated") for premium performance. They thread into the barrels of virtually any 1.25" telescope eyepiece. Each filter cell has a male and female 1.25" filter thread (M28.5x0.6) on opposite sides, so multiple filters can be stacked to achieve selective filtration of the visual color spectrum. The clear aperture is 25.6mm and each filter comes in a protective plastic storage case. Made in Taiwan.

The #47 Violet Filter stops red, yellow, and green colors. It is useful for detecting high clouds and haze in the Martian polar cap regions and during the violet clearing. It is most useful in observing Venus because of its ability to reveal dark shading in the upper atmosphere. It also helps to view the ring-structure of Saturn. The filter is great for enhancing lunar detail too. Its low transmittance makes it suitable only for larger telescopes above 8" of aperture.

      5.0 Good product

This filter was ordered to image clouds on Venus. To image clouds on Venus you normally need a specialized UV filter. However, some have had limited success with a #47. Unfortunately, many of the filters sold on the market have little resemblance to what is shown in the specs for that filter. Upon receiving this filter I looked at several different color of lights. This filter visually filters out all but violet and blue which is how it is supposed to work. Though I haven't checked it with a spectroscope it seems to live up to it's potential. Unfortunately, I was not able to image the Venusian clouds. This is not surprising since I was using an AR102 refractor, so the chance of seeing clouds was pretty limited. The glass of a refractor absorbs much of the UV light that reflects from the cloud tops on Venus and I also did not have the right barlow to have a chance at spotting the clouds. It was fun to attempt this project and it definitely was not a faulty filter that prevented success! Good product and received as advertised!

      5.0 Purple Haze

      Pros:

      Easy to Use,Compact,Accurate,Lightweight,Strong Construction,Quality Lenses

      Cons:

      Comments:

I bought two of these to use for finding planetary satellites much easier as described in a recent issue of Sky & Telescope. You cut one of the filters in half and glue/attach to the focal plane of one of your high power eyepieces and you can keep the planet inside the violet filter and leave the other side free and clear of any filtration which should make finding the moons of Saturn, Uranus and Neptune much easier. I have yet to cut the filters because I recently bought some CCD video cameras to accomplish this task.
