Manufacturer Description
An infrared filter (also called an IR Block filter) is a very important accessory for imaging with today's CCDs, digitial cameras or webcams. Imaging sensors in these cameras are sensitive to visible light as well as to infrared wavelengths. As a result, images of stars might be bloated and lunar and planetary images will be soft.
GSO's IR Blocking filter is recommended for use with CCD, video & webcams for sharper images. It threads on to any CCD camera, eyepiece, or adapter that accepts 1.25" filters. Such filters are required when imaging with refractor telescopes. Compound reflectors (like Schmidt-Cassegrain and Maksutov-Cassegrain telescopes) will also benefit from an IR-block filter to some extent. Even imaging through Newtonian telescopes will benefit since IR filters will reduce "IR bleed". As an added advantage, use of this filter also acts as a dust cover for the sensitive CCD chip in imaging devices.
This filter has an extremely sharp cutoff at 690nm, yet it transmits all the visible red wavelengths (including the important 656nm H-alpha emission line) and prevents IR wavelengths from blurring fine detail in your digital images. GSO does not provide a transmission curve for its filter but we had one tested at the physics lab of a local college. The tested unit had peak visible light transmission of over 95%. GSO does not claim that this filter also blocks out UV wavelengths.
The filter cell is beautifully machined and black-anodized with threads on both sides (male on one side and female on the other), so you can stack this filter with other 1.25" filters. Its clear aperture is a full 26mm. The filter glass is scratch resistant and the filter can be used with a telescope of any f-ratio. The glass substrate is of very high optical quality, so it can be used in front of a lens without degrading the image quality. In fact, the GSO filter is a more expensive coated "dichroic" filter that displays a pinkish reflecting tint, as opposed to cheaper "absorbing glass" IR block filters which exhibit a greenish tint.
The GSO IR Blocking filter ships in a protective, foam-lined, plastic storage case.
Specifications:
Total item length (including external male thread) = 11.1mm (0.44")
Clear aperture = 26mm (1.02")
Weight = 0.2 oz.

A much needed addition to my filer sets
Pros:Quality Lenses,Easy to Use,Lightweight,Accurate,Strong Construction,Compact
Cons: Comments:I got this filer because I am going to try my hand at Astrophotography. I wanted a very good quality filter and I know that GSO would be the one to get.
Bottom Line: Would you recommend this item? Yes
This filter may also be a UV filter which is great!
I have read that many times a IR filter is also a UV filter. This should help me take great photos of the objects I want to photograph. This review was provided courtesy of AgenaAstro.com
Sep 28, 2013Excellent Quality and Service
Pros:Easy to Use,Accurate,Quality Lenses,Strong Construction,Compact,Lightweight
Cons: Comments:These IR filters screwed onto a webcam adapter nose piece. The threads matched perfectly. The IR filters are high quality products. The modified webcams will be used in my astronomical observing this fall and winter.

Feb 24, 2012For photography, one form or another
Pros:Easy to Use,Lightweight,Compact,Quality Lenses
Cons: Comments:I used this to cut down the IR saturation due to unwanted (in my case) IR sensitivity in the camera I adapted for use with a telescope.

Dec 16, 2011Good quality filter
Pros:Easy to Use
Cons: Comments:I use this filter for planetary imaging and as protection over my imager's CCD chip. It is good value and I am happy with my resulting images.

Nov 1, 2011Excellent value
Pros:Easy to Use,Quality Lenses,Strong Construction,Performance
Cons:None
Comments:I use this exclusively in photographing the planets. This filter very effectively reduces infrared blooming of the planets and the moon, allowing for much clearer, more detailed views. I am very happy with the performance, and this unit is priced far below any other similar filter. I believe you cannot do any better at any price.

May 27, 2009IR Blocking filter
Pros:Quality Lenses
Cons: Comments:The GSO 1.25" IR Blocker has served me well. I purchased this filter for a modified webcam after removing the manufactures internal IR filter, with it on or off my photos are just what I expected. I must say I feel it would stack up against some of the other major brands

May 27, 2009A Good Choice
Pros: Cons: Comments:This filter seemed to work as well as another, more expensive brand when compared side to side at a local star party. Mine just cost less.

Light and Compact, Well constructed.
It outputs a greenish/bluish image that has to be corrected in the blue channel. This review was provided courtesy of AgenaAstro.com
May 26, 2009WORKS JUST FINE- AND FOR LESS MONEY
Pros:Quality Lenses
Cons: Comments:Just started imaging with a Celestron NexImage. Ordered the IR Cut filter because I had trouble getting a clear focus on the Moon. I was concerend at first because the GSO brand isn't well known, but the product works fine and the service from Agena was first rate.
