If you are in looking for a high quality portable scope absolutely loaded with features and performance you need look no further.
The Meade ETX-90 telescope features an advanced Maksutov-Cassegrain design for pinpoint star images and extraordinary contrast, making it a great deep sky performer and ideal for detailed lunar and planetary observation as it easily soars to high magnifications. This 90mm (3.5") model has a focal length of 1250mm (f/13.8) with Meade's best Ultra-High Transmission Coatings (UHTC).
Electronics include the Meade AutoStar keypad with over 30,000 object library and which can be linked to a PC using an optionally available software and cable connector set, allowing the telescope to be controlled via a laptop or other PC. An AC adapter is also available for separate purchase.
Standard equipment includes a high performance Meade Series 4000 1.25" diameter 26mm eyepiece (magnification of 48X), easy to use red dot viewfinder, and portable but extremely stable Meade Model 884 field tripod with chrome plated tubular steel legs and built-in wedge. Also includes Meade AutoStar Suite Astronomer Edition Software and Instructional DVD to locate objects in the night sky, print star maps, and learn more about the use and uses of your new telescope.
A telescope is only as good as its mount and this mechanically sophisticated model includes an extremely rigid dual fork design. The similarly advanced optical tube design incorporates a unique flip mirror mechanism, allowing light to either go to the comfortable 90 degree observing position of the eyepiece or the built in camera attachment port at the rear of the tube. This ETX90 was given to me as a birthday present from my wife last October and I was very happy with the quality of the scope. I also have a Celestron C8 on a Vixen polaris mount which does not have any GoTo capability. The ETX90 has now become the scope I use mostly, it's very easy to polar align in either mode EQ or Altazimuth.
The GoTo is quite accurate after a descent polar alignment normally dropping the target within the 26mm eyepiece (the first star is normally a few degrees off but with the addition of a green laser this is not a probem)
Since this scope has GoTo capability and my C8 does not I have added a green laser to both scopes and when I want to point the C8 at an unseen object I can find it with the ETX-90 switch on the laser on both scopes and then just slew the C8 until the laser beams are pointing at the same object saved me upgrading my Vixen mount for the time being.
The optics are very good considering the cost of the package and with the addition of the Meade 844 tripod which I have found to be better that others in the same class the scope is quite stable unless there is wind around in which case I would suggest hanging some weights from the tripod center to give it a bit more rigidity.
The one item I would say was not in the same caliber as the rest is the finder scope which I found very cheap and not of much use, but this is not a problem as I added the green laser.
I have used to scope to view many objects in the night sky and would certainly recommend it as a scope for anybody starting out in the hobby, it's easy to work with lightweight and very cost effective.
