The world standard in telescope oculars, Meade Series 4000 eyepieces yield the widest possible fields of view, consistent with pinpoint edge-of-field sharpness and long eye relief - and yet with extremely low astigmatism, spherical aberration, and off-axis color. Incorporating 7-layer multi-coatings and edge-blackened optics for optimum image contrast, these sophisticated 4 to 8-element designs permit levels of optical performance generally impossible to achieve with eyepieces of fewer elements. All Series 4000 eyepieces include a soft rubber eyeguard, custom fitted to each eyepiece with a bayonet mount. The eyeguards fold down for eyeglass wearers, and in fact the folded eyeguard shields eyeglasses from coming into contact with the metal eyepiece housings. Rubber grips are provided on all but the three shortest focal length Super Plossl eyepieces.
Designed to utilize the very latest in optical glass types, Meade 4-element Super Plossls are excellent general-purpose eyepieces. For observing hairline lunar and planetary detail, splitting close double stars, or for resolving faint nebulosity in deep-space, Meade Super Plossls optimize the performance of any telescope type, whether it is a f/10 Schmidt-Cassegrain, f/16 refractor, or f/4 reflector!
Product carries full one year Meade factory limited warranty (within US/Canada only).

Meade Series 4000 1.25" Super Plossl Eyepiece - 9.7mm # 07171-02Pros: Cons: Comments:
I purchased this eyepiece expecting a great increase in clarity over my basic eyepiece of the same power. Since it was on sale, I decided to pull the trigger. However, I could not say the view improved that much that you could tell a significate difference, I will confess that I have a basic 80mm Celestron refractor. The view may show more improvement with a better scope. I did seem to show more of the imperfections of the primary lens so that seemed to limit the amount of improvement expected from the eyepiece. Agena AstroProducts did a great job filling the order and also provided a free case for it.

Great inexpensive upgrade eyepiecePros:
Accurate,Strong Construction,Easy to Use,Lightweight,Compact,Quality LensesCons: Comments:
This eyepiece is a great inexpensive upgrade to the cheapo eyepieces that came with my Celestron Firstscope. It gives me 31x magnification and nice views of the Orion Nebula, the Pleiades and the Moon. Eye relief OK, for people who don't need glasses. This is a good companion eyepiece to go with the Meade 4000 20mm Plossl, if you're on a budget but still want good quality.

Meade 9.7mm EyepiecePros:
Lightweight,Accurate,Easy to Use,Strong Construction,Compact,Quality LensesCons: Comments:
I bought this eyepiece to replace some poor eyepieces that came with a 4" refractor I was giving to a young person for a Christmas gift. I tested the eyepiece on the telescope before giving it to him. The view was excellent.

Good all-around eyepiece.Pros:
Good price (when purchased as a set), universal use with quality coatings.Cons:
Could use better eye relief.Comments:
I acquired this eyepiece in the Series 4000 set. This is a good all-around eyepiece. I wear glasses and remove them and adjust the focus due to the eye relief. I get good planetary views with my refractor and good DSO views with my reflector and this eyepiece. Image is above average across the whole FOV. I would not recommend purchasing this eyepiece solo for the price, but as part of the Series 4000 set, the price is decent.
This is a good all-around eyepiece with a good price (when part of the set). Works well for plantery, DSO and lunar viewing. Definitely better than the eyepieces that usually come with a scope.

Meade Super Plossl Series 4000 9.7mmPros:
Can be found sometimes on the cheapCons:
Eye relief terrible, Chinese/Taiwan models poorly made.Comments:
Included in the eyepiece set I got from Meade for $99 (with the purchase of a new LX90) was this plossl 9.7mm. But what a disappointment it was! Eye relief was almost as terrible as the 6.4mm eyepiece. Stats are: FOV 49 degrees (I doubt it but I can't tell for sure), eye relief 4mm, 4 glass elements and the weight is 0.2 lbs.
Since I sold them some time ago I've found out that if you are very lucky and can acquire some of these made in Japan, and not the Chinese/Taiwan made plossls, they might be keepers. I've not had the luck of looking through any of the Japanese models, but these Chinese/Taiwan plossls are not worth the money. Cost new is $80. The views in my LX-90 f/10 SCT were poor. The viewing had to be almost perfect to realize a good view. The only good thing about this eyepiece was to have some value in trading them away for some Televue plossls that I still have today. Some of the plossls in the case were decent but I'll review them in their own review.Sort by
