Product Info
Manufacturer Description
For glare-reduction in observing the Moon, the #905 Variable Polarizer includes two Polarizer filters mounted in a specially-machined cell. The #905 permits variable settings of the light transmission between 5% and 25%, to account for varying lunar surface brightness according to the phase of the Moon and the magnification and aperture of the telescope. Accepts 1.25" eyepieces.
The advantage of this design over other polarizers is that to use the other polarizers, one has to constantly take out the eyepiece to re-adjust the amount of polarization. The Meade Variable Polarizing Filter System #905 lets you achieve variable transmission on the fly without removing the eyepiece from the diagonal. This is a huge convenience. This item inserts into the diagonal prism of the telescope, followed by an eyepiece.
Product carries full one year Meade factory limited warranty (within US/Canada only).

Mar 3, 2017Works like a charm!
Pros: Cons: Comments:I was looking for an alternative to the screw-on filters that required you to pull out the eyepiece to adjust the setting and found gold with the Meade filter. I used it with my recently acquired Meade 4000 Series Zoom (and other EPs) and it worked like a charm. Adjustments are smooth and flawless as you slide the screw back and forth, and just tighten when you've found your sweet spot. Well done , Meade!

Feb 13, 2017Very convenient
Pros:Ability to adjust transmission without removing the eyepiece.
Cons:
Quality construction.
Reasonable price.
Gets the job done.Nothing
Comments:With my old filter I had to remove the eyepiece every time I wanted to adjust the transmission level. This filter allows me to adjust the transmission on the fly! No more removing EPs to change settings. Very convenient little filter. A must-have for those who don't want to interrupt their observing sessions!

Feb 26, 2015Unique and efficient
Pros:Lightweight,Easy to Use,Compact
Cons: Comments:I give this five stars for one major reason: it is the only thing like it I've found, and it does its job well. This unit allows you to change EP configuration without switching a polarizing filter, which is greatly beneficial in terms of time and potentially dropped equipment. There is one annoyance, but I'll offer a mod: the set screw, which seats metal on metal, will loosen, changing the polarizing setting. I simply added a cheap hardware store nylon washer under the set screw, so there is now a bit of compression to hold it tight. Don't go too thick on the washer, though: the set screw isn't that long!

Oct 31, 2011Useful
Pros:Easy to Use
Cons:Unstable
Comments:Does what it says. Simple construction, a little flimsy to tune the second polarizer filter. Good overall.

Feb 17, 2009Great for solar observing with Herschel Wedge
Pros: Cons: Comments:I love this filter. I use it between a Herschel wedge and the eyepiece for solar observing. Changing the eyepieces changes the magnification and the brightness of the image, and with this variable filter you can change the brightness to your convienence.
Bottom Line: Would you recommend this item? Yes
My refractor is 1200mm FL so the image of the sun with a 32mm 1.25 eyepiece is the one I like the most, and when a cloud comes in the field of view I can adjust the filter to see more.
I recommend this filter. This review was provided courtesy of AgenaAstro.com
