Nikon Action 8x40 Binoculars
Pros:Inexpensive, travel well, nice Nikon Warranty, well built, great coatings
Cons:Borderline for astronomy
Comments:I purchased these binoculars used for under $35 in what turned out to be an excellent choice. They cost $75 new and are still a nice starter pair of binos even at that price.
Bottom Line: Would you recommend this item? Yes
These are excellent grab-and-go binos for a quick look in the day for birding or at night just to have a quick look at the moon. An excellent 8.2 degrees FOV gives you a very wide view and it fits perfectly in my hands. At less than 2 pounds they pack and travel well. They come with a 25 year limited warranty, along with a very nice soft case and strap. The green coatings are excellent, but these Actions are not waterproof.
The exit pupil is a nice 5 degrees with 12mm of eyerelief. This eyerelief is borderline for those who wear eyeglasses.
For astronomy, once again, they are borderline. The middle 50% of the field is just fine, but the balance is fair out to about 75%. Beyond that, it become poor to the edge. However you must consider these binos as mostly for daytime use as well as limited use for astronomy as it's only 8 power. Considering there limitations, I do recommend them.Sort by
