Oberwerk 22x100 binoculars
Pros:Inexpensive, great views, well made, very good collimation.
Cons:Very heavy, needs a heavy-duty tripod and head, Narrow FOV
Comments:Last night (7/25/08) my friend invited me to his house to view through these very large binoculars. What a treat! Bought new recently at over $400 shipped, these are the largest binoculars I've ever looked through.
Bottom Line: Would you recommend this item? Yes
They are fully multi-coated and feature BAK4 porro prisms, a FOV of 3.8 degrees, 18mm of eye relief and the weight is almost 9 pounds. He has these mounted on a Bogen tripod and a Bogen head, which makes for a very nice setup.
Jupiter was a pleasure to view. The center band was very visible as were the four moons. On axis, no color was visible, although some color was observed off-axis. My friend and I disagreed about whether the stars were sharp pinpoints - I thought they were while he didn't. Lunar views was very impressive. The contrast was excellent, but some color around the moon was visible. You could, by moving your eyes, almost eliminate the minimal color, but in no way did that detract from the wonderful views of the moon. Pleiades was too large to view within the field.
We had a great night of star hopping, and all this for four hundred dollars! Binoculars have come a long way in recent years.Sort by
