Orion Epic ED-2 22mm
Pros:Not too expensive, ED glass, Parfocal, Soft eyecup
Cons:Works better in a slow scope; Background not very dark in a fast scope.
Comments:I received this eyepiece in a trade and finally had a chance to use it with my 8" f/10 SCT. I find this EP acceptable - its not superb, but worth the $68 you need to purchase it new.
Bottom Line: Would you recommend this item? Yes
With a 55 degree FOV and a very soft rubber eyecup this eyepiece is very nicely manufactured. It sports fully multi-coated lenses, 6 glass elements with 2 glass elements being ED glass, and provides a very good 20mm of eyerelief. This EP worked nicely in my scope with stars sharp right to the edge. However in a fast scopes you will loose about 10 to 20% from the edge in sharpness. Orion says these eyepieces are parfocal, but this is the only Epic I own.
If you own a slow scope and don't compare it to a Radian for example, this EP should be a keeper. It also works well for star parties.Sort by
