Orion Epic ED-2 3.7mm
Pros:Affordable, and for lunar viewing only.
Cons:Very heavy, kidney beaning & blackouts if eye not perfect.
Comments:I had a chance to usea number of Orion's Epic ED-2 eyepieces in my 8" f/10 SCT the other evening . This is a review of the 3.7mm.
Bottom Line: Would you recommend this item? No
This is a very heavy eyepiece. Fit and finish is decent, coating are a nice green tint, fully multi-coated. New they are about $70, less on the used market. Comes with a bolt case and end caps from Orion, with a 30 day money back deal.
I found the only way I liked this eyepiece is while viewing the moon. Even then you had to have very good seeing and an almost perfect night. I found excessive kidney beaning and if you don't have your eye just right, some blackouts. Contrast was good overall. Planets were so-so and other than the Lunar viewing, I did not like the performance of this EP. Works better with the eye not that close to the glass.Sort by
