5.0 The 9mm Orion Expanse Telescope Eyepiece

      Pros:

Affordable, 66 degree FOV, solid construction and very fine optics

      Cons:

      None

      Comments:

If you can afford only one top end eyepiece, make it the one with a focal length about twice your scopes focal ratio. (The Backyard Astronomers Guide). The 9mm Orion Expanse Telescope Eyepiece is the closest I could come to the “optimal eye piece” for my Dobsonian XT10 (2 X f/4.7 = 9.4mm). The versatility and sharp views make the price / performance value of this eyepiece excellent. The 15mm eye relief is fantastic and the 66º wide field of view makes this one of my most valued eyepieces.

      4.0 Orion Expanse 9mm

      Pros:

Wide 66 degree FOV; Above average construction; Sharp with good contrast; Very affordable.

      Cons:

      None.

      Comments:

Yes, I must admit that I do like the entire collection of Orion Expanse eyepieces, and the 9mm is no exception. Built with power, a wide field of view , and long eye-relief in mind, the 9mm Expanse doesn't disappoint. In a Celestron C80ED, the views were sharp with good contrast, and none of the flaring or ghosting exhibited in the 20mm. However, I still think these eyepieces perform better on deep-sky objects, rather than planets, but I was impressed nonetheless on how it handled lunar targets. Not having to squint through a small peephole, or touch your eyeball to the surface of the eye lens, as you would in a standard plossl, is worth the price of admission. Again, as with the other Expanse siblings, the eyepiece is well constructed, fully multi-coated, has blackened lens edges, is threaded for 1.25" filters, and sports a FOV of about 66 degrees. And the price is very reasonable at around $50.

Orion has a very liberal return policy if you find that this 9mm expanse doesn't suit your taste, but I'm betting it will meet your needs until you can move up to something more exotic.

      4.0 Orion Expanse Wide-Field 9mm

      Pros:

Excellent price, decent views, excellent customer service.

      Cons:

Not the highest quality eyepiece, but nice for the money

      Comments:

I needed a high power eyepiece with a wide view if possible, and I've tried these and have not been disappointed. These sell for $50.00 each from Orion and for the money they are quite nice, if not superior. Orion is quite well known for their excellent customer service and these eyepieces are very nice. The stats are: FOV 66 degrees, eye relief 16mm with four elements, fully multicoated on all glass surfaces. For eyeglass users these work well with a decent FOV throughout. Nice green tint in the coatings. Comes boxed with caps. For my highest power eyepieces I use these all the time. Very good views on very clear nights. If you are viewing the moon, do use filters. The pinpoint views fall off at about 80% out, but I've never held that against them at 9mm. If you don't like them return them within 30 days per Orion customer service policy.
